The system described in it has two major advantages over other systems that have been used for this purpose.[list:34c8e28304][*:34c8e28304]It does not use the flawed OPS stat or the complete gibberish "H+E/TB per AB/G" stat, but instead, uses a stat that directly represents actual runs. (The stat I use goes by the catchy name of New Estimated Runs Produced, or NERP.)[*:34c8e28304]It includes double plays turned by infielders.[/list:u:34c8e28304]The ZIP file includes both the spreadsheet I used to do the work, and a Word document that walks you through where all the numbers come from. However, if all you want is to figure out player values, then all you really need is the last two pages of the Word doc.

Excellent work. Your calculations look and feel right. It serves to remind me that I should occassionally consider some "iron-glove" fielders rather than give into "4-phobia."

That's some good stuff. And it is a bit easeir to follow than many articles I have seen which is a great thing for a guy like me.

Dean, this is outstanding work. I'll be interested in reading more of your analysis. I'm just getting back into Strat after 30 years or so (my third team this season) and this helps get my brain in gear. I'm just starting to apply the NERP formulas to pitchers to help with lineups vs. opposing pitchers.

I've actually had Manny and Vlad in the outfield together before with much success, figuring their offense would make up for their defense. But there are soooo many factors involved with that, like who are your pitchers, etc..

I think the main thing is to try different things and enjoy the team you put together!

Glad you liked it! Manny's offense definitely does "make up for" his defense, in the sense that '06 Manny (LF-4) is still a better LF option than '06 Crawford, who is not a bad hitter himself and is LF-1. However (rounding numbers off here), Manny's 11-run advantage over Crawford on offense (per 216 PA) turns into only a four-run advantage when you add in defense. So it's always a question of what you're trading off, and what your other options are. I don't think it matters who your pitchers are, though, since all pitchers have the same X-rolls.
