I like Simmons or Thurmond over Hiller as a LH 4 day SP.

Other than Aaron and to some degree Speaker, you do not have much power (not HR power), so I would look for another good SLG. Rolfe is a fav or mine if available.

Best of luck, sschu

Your team's issues were not with the rotation. Hiller/Speer/Rommel are fine as the back end. Might prefer Works and Frock to Hiller and Rommel but what you had was not a problem. I'd suggest dropping Russo and putting the money back into your lineup.

Figure your goal here is to be 20+ over .500 combined with your top two starters and to break .500 overall with the balance of your staff.

Adams/Reulbach/Hiller/Speer/Frock just won 94 games for the Refugees in Griffith.

OT & sschu,

The pickings are a little slim. Just made a bunch more changes. Offensively, there just aren't that many options.

Available in LF are Keller, McCosky & Cleon. But Leibold gives me a similar OBP for alot less $$$. Which I put into quality depth. I have no problem at all downgrading Russo, I just don't see a much better place to put the $$$.

I'd love to get back up to Gehrig, but at what price. I'd have to use Speer and Rommell as #4 & #5. I could swing Boog Powell if I dropped Russo, but is he really better than Luderus in my park???

Keep those ideas flying, I've got about 30 mins to nail it down, then I'm off.

One problem with only 2 stud pitchers as OT suggests when they are non 3 day rest guys: You cannot be 20 games over 500 in the playoffs they will only get you 2 games over 500, you'd need 1 of the other 3 to win and most likely you'll be the underdog in each game. Therefore this will reduce your chances of winning a championship even though I believe OT may be correct about winning more games in the regular season.

I usually prefer enough stud pitching on my pitching teams to be the favorite in over 1/2 the games.

I'd drop Gehrig for Frank McCormick. He can't get hurt, he's cheap, he's a 1, and he always manages to knock in around 100 for me.

I'd drop Reulbach for either Lanier or Russo.

I'd pick up a solid #3 starter with leftover cash (Lanier/Russo, Ogden/Ehmke/Hildebrand/Gomez/Feller/Shaw/Dean/Munger)

Shaw is a personal favorite.

Grab Schalk instead of Dempsey, he gets on base better.

Instead of Devore and his errors, look into Freddy Clarke or Jo Jo Moore, both favorites of mine for low money.

Don't drop Aaron. He hits no matter where the park, just like in real life. :D

Just some suggestions. It's tougher to win with the 5 man, but you can use your park to your advantage here.

Assuming you make the playoffs it is not improbable that you might face either me, Nev, or Frank Bailey. Gehrig would suit you verrrry well in all three of our parks. Qualifying for the playoffs is not difficult. While you should certainly take into account your division opponent's parks, I always consider the parks of the better managers, should we meet in the playoffs.

One of my theories of team construction is based on 1 awesome hitter in small ball parks. They can hit anywhere and protect you in hitters parks. Here is a recent example - for what it is worth.

Not the weakest division either. OT was in my division -- 29 games back despite a positive rs vs ra differential. :D

Also, Splittorf was a late season pick up (around game 141) as one opponent had lots of lefties. I forget if it was in my division or a possible playoff opponent. Valentine was there to protect Mantle from seeing too many lefties. Seems he did his job, and then some. Note that Mantle had exactly half the team homeruns. Although the team ERA was a little high for Forbes, Clemens won the Cy Young and Drysdale finished 4th in the voting. Mantle was the league MVP.

Anyway, this team took the semi's in four and the finals in 6. Gehrig and Mantle are very similar offensively. He might do the same for you.

Petro,

I stuck with my team, squeezed Gehrig in under the cap and cut Russo. The last "Smallball" team I built won a ring with Aaron in RF and Cooper at 1B in Forbes. I like the idea of having a lefty and righty Bopper in the lineup even on a smallball team.

Opened the season 3-0 against Grindi's Camels team.

Hope to see you in the playoffs ..........

Yeah, I never saw so many 3-0 starts in one league. Too bad Nev was on the wrong end of that... for once!

Sorry to hear you kept Gehrig. Now it's another team for me to worry about. Especially after Frank now has tied PBTR with 14 rings while I managed to lose 3-4 in the finals last night after being up 3-1.
