Anyone had luck with...?

Postby honestiago1 » Mon Aug 28, 2006 9:41 pm

Got Fernando and Carlton in the draft. Just wondering if anyone has ever had those two together over a season. Seems like they'd just eat the innings up. I've got Luzinski, but am contemplating dumping him for a LH/RH DH combo (my lineup is short of lefties).

Also: just wondering how Joe Carter fares vis-a-vis run production. I know Strat favors clutch hitters if you got table setters. Carew/Butler/ Fernandez should get on base (depending on Tony's year -- I always seem to get good run production outa Tones in the #2 hole on any of his four good years). All of them can run. I assume Carter should produce in the cleanup spo (though it's Exhibition stadium). The league is definitely favors hitter on the whole (2 arlingtons, a fulton, riverfront, two cle's, two vets, a fenway). No Astrodome, no Royals, no dodger or shea. And the kingdome is somehow missing. Hmm....Luzinski might just kick a$$ in this league...

I've ended a season with Carter twice. Both times I had the 1991 card (2nd highest OPS).
Name AB R 2B HR RBI BB SB E BA SLG OBP
Carter, J. 664 81 39 29 108 27 12 7 .271 .467 .306
Carter, J. 436 63 18 26 65 25 12 5 .262 .491 .305

1st line was in Busch, played all 162 games. 2nd line was in the Kingdome, played in 110 out of 162 games, so for a full season he would have driven in about 96 runs and hit 38 homeruns. McGwire, Hojo, and Dale Murphy all hit 50+ homeruns in front of him, so they probably "took" some of Carter's RBI chances.

So his production is ok, he drives in a lot of runs, but he wasn't spectacular. I'd put him in more in the 5 or 6 hole. He's durable, fields and runs fairly well, and should give you a reliable 25-35 HR with 90-110 RBI.

I just can't stand his OBP. Never understood it when he played with the Jays, scares me off in Strat.
In my opinion, there are better choices with Tartabull, Baylor, Gaetti, Darrell Evans - who have as much pop but get on base more.

I've had success with Darrell Evans, but Carter does have much more speed and defense than all those guys-- in addition to good power in the right park.

Fernando can be a beast, but sometimes you have to weather rough patches along the way. I havent had any luck with Lefty, although i've only used him twice. Ive seen him do well, though- but then again, if you play long enough, you can see ANY pitcher have a great season.

...and of course the opposite can be true too. I was shocked at the end of the last March Madness round, when I found I had landed El Sid's best card (1989). Playing in Dodger Stadium, with his best card, he was mediocre for his hefty price...12-14 with a 3.57 ERA and a ratio of 1.18. His card has an ERA of 2.83 with a ratio of 1.06 (and a 14-5 record). I figured I had '86 or '90...but I'd have thought I'd have seen much better production out of him for his best card. And the fact he failed to show up at all in my final first round playoff game really frosted me! But that's why we play the games, eh?

I think the salary you pay for "Fat Sid" in this game is by the pound...not by his ability to perform.

Carter's "clutch"

Postby honestiago1 » Tue Aug 29, 2006 6:13 pm

Most of Joe's cards have him losing a hit here and there via the "horseshoe." He does have a card with a whole buncha SINGLE**'s. It's tough -- the other teams in my division have beefed up on power, and none of the parks is an out and out pitcher's park. I have potential for great staff if Dave Martinez pulls one of his 3 great ones and I get one of Sutcliffe's good years.

I'm sticking with Carter for the D, the baserunning, the ability to play several positions decently (I'm carrying only 13 batters), and due to the rpeponderance of hitter's parks in the league. I had Armas, but dropped him for Barfield (again, I'm thinking the hitter's parks will help). I have Porter and White, who should both produce in the hitter's environs. Defense is solid: Carew (average), White, TFernandez, Oberkfell. Thought about Darrell Evans at first over Carew, but I want carew's OBP in the top three holes, plus his running.

Pitching: pen has agosto, lefferts, clear, lopez, sutter, assenmacher -- this could turn out to be my one big advantage (we'll see, huh?).

I've had some monster years from Sid--also some terrible years.

When he's 24-5 or even 17-6 (as he has been for me in two successive season) the price seems very reasonable, but when he's 3-4 (ERA 6.47 in 11 games), as he was for me a couple of seasons later, the price seems outrageous. As with anyone else, it all comes down to the year and the performance.

I like Luzinski and have had some excellent years from him. He's not glamorous (and wasn't in real life) but he has good OBP and good power and grinds out the runs in four of his five seasons. One nice thing about him is that he's a righty who can hit righties and his platoon differentials are sufficiently balanced so that he can hold down the DH slot by himself, which isn't always true of the competition. He has enough BPHR to hit a lot of HR in a HR park but also enough natural power to be useful in a pitcher's park.
Also, while I don't like him at 1B because of the e25, he's OK in LF if you need to play him there, since the errors aren't too bad. I don't usually start the season with him, but I've picked him up several times when somebody else bombed out and he's usually comes through. He's hitting like mad on two of my teams right now as a mid-season pickup so I'm feeling good about him at the moment. :D

What about Sutcliffe?

Postby honestiago1 » Tue Aug 29, 2006 8:57 pm

I am so tempted to get Langston to add to Carlton and Fernando. He's expensive, but I think power pitching is the best way to go. Only thing is, Sut is a reverse righty who has that one lights out year. Mark pitched in hitter's parks all five years, and his cards are not bad on HR's if he's moved to a better park (which he would be doing with Exhibition).

I'd really like to see what these big K lefties can do. If there all decent, I'm going to shut down a lot of teams. Nothing kills a rally like a K (well, a DP, but you know the deal).

I don't have Sid Fernandez, but I know her can be good.

Luzinski: I've always liked him. Only thing that turns me off is that 1-8 running rating. But, man, does he produce.
