Is Hal Retarded?

Is Hal Retarded?

Postby dieselpride » Tue Sep 12, 2006 5:25 am

I put quick hook, and aggresive relief usage on my team and 2 of my first 3 starters went 8 worthless innings in complete game losses.

Not to mention the fact that he only used one reliever in the 3rd game for me and 3 for the team that was ahead. My pitcher pitched much worse and Hal went longer with him. Please explain this to me.

If this is how it is going to be this will be the last $25 I waste on this game. :x :?:

Diesel,

This is exactly why after my trial season I decided not to waste my money. If the system isn't set up fairly you can't expect it to play that way.

I've been consistently having the opposite problem. I'll have an $8M starter set to slow hook with relief settings on conservative and HAL pulls them in the 5th inning when they've thrown about 50 pitches and given up 2 or 3 runs.

Funny. Not quite as funny as Sunday when Tom Jackson asked Michael Irvin if he was retarded, but funny.

Yeah, I've had the same problem. I put the SP on slow hook (my bull pen is weak), and two of my relief guys are worth anything (Lidge and Nathan).

I'm trying to figure out how to just use Lidge (Set-up, L,R) and Nathan (Closer, Max), but it's throws Lidge in the game in the 5th or 6th, and then pulls him out after .2 innings when a guy gets on.

Statisitically, I wouldn't pull him because the 3 other $0.5M relief guys are a liability.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Doc

You should definitely try the slow hook on Lidge too. I am not sure, though, that your overall setup is going to work. If you want two pitchers to dominate most of your relief innings, they can't be R1s. Not without them showing the effects of overwork, anyway. Which, honestly, is how it should be.

Over time, HAL will favor an R2 or R3 even if the R1 has a significantly better card. You simply cannot expect HAL to overwork an R1. It won't happen. You are better off getting a less expensive R2 (or a combo depending on your budget). Of course, an R1/C6 will suffice as a closer, but don't expect alot of innings.

In general from my experience, you must have depth in your pen if you want HAL to make good decisions. Having to good relievers and a bunch of deadweight is asking for trouble (unless of course you have a dominant rotation).

Thanks for those thoughts. I thought that usage was not an issue with the web based version ... so these guys can pitch a while.

What did I miss?

Thanks,
Doc
