"By team" draft?

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

I love this idea along with the American League only idea I threw out in the current over/under 4M league that I am in. The American Leauge idea restrictions would be something like:

25 player roster

American League players only. Player must have played 3 out 5 years of the years listed in the American Leauge.

One stud National League player, pitcher or hitter.

Lotto picks for the stud and stadium. American Leauge stadiums with no duplication of stadiums.

National League stud cannot be dropped, but can be traded for any player, American or National.

Let's Decide

Postby LMBombers » Sat Oct 22, 2005 9:08 am

OK, I would like to propose two sets of rules. You vote on which you like best or maybe we can tweak one or the other in some way.

For either of the below options a player is property of the team he has the most cards from. For example if player A has 3 possible cards for the Cardinals and 2 cards for the Brewers he would be considered property of the Cardinals. Ties go to the first team listed on the card. For example if player A has a 79 card for the Expos, 80 & 82 card for the Padres and an 83 and 85 card for the Orioles he would be property of the Padres (Padres came before Orioles).

RULES OPTION #1 (two team league):
80M, DH
You must pick 1 AL and 1 NL team and use players from those teams for your roster. A two round serpentine draft will be used for team selection. Order to be determined by lotto.
Your team name must include one part of both teams for ease of determining who your teams are. For example Atlanta Red Sox or Boston Braves.
You have the rights to all players associated with your teams whether they are on your current roster or not. Other teams may not pick up free agents associated with your teams.
You must use one of your team's stadiums.
No trading allowed.

RULES OPTION #2 (one team league):
80M, DH
You pick one team's players to be your team. Order to be determined by lotto. Only you have the rights to that teams players whether they are on your current roster or not.
Your team name must be such that it is clear to everyone what franchise you have.
You may have 3 non-franchise players on your roster at any time. There will be a 3 round non-franchise player draft prior to the autodraft. A non-franchise player is a player who belongs to a team not selected. For example if no one selects the Brewers as their team then Robin Yount would be a non-franchise player for any team in the league.
You may drop/add your non-franchise players for any other available non-franchise players but you may only have 3 of them on your roster at any time.
Trading of non-franchise players is allowed. Trading of franchise players is not.
There will be 4 rounds of live draft. The first round will be for franchise team. Rounds 2-4 will be for your non-franchise players. Order for this draft determined by lotto.
You must use your team's stadium.

What do you all think?

Option #1

But I like the idea of drafting franchise players from non-drafted teams, with the stipulation that franchise players from non-drafted teams cannot be released or traded.

I doubt this is the case, but in the unlikely event that a player appeared for 5 different teams, I propose that his "owning" team be the first one on his card, as well (I thought about saying the last team, but for the sake of uniformity, first makes more sense).

How will we do the lotto?

I like the idea. We should do this.

Owning teams

The early season concept severly limits the player pool available. I propose that you can draft a player that played for your team any year. BUT IF REQUESTED IN A TRADE by another TEAM holding a pre-emptive year-then the trade must be made. This concept would encourage trading-might add an extra element of surprise to the game.

One thing, the players who are on teams that were not

Postby AdamPhoenix » Sat Oct 22, 2005 11:06 am

selected. What about the idea that you are only allowed to have 4 non-primary team hitters (i.e. PAdres are not selected by anyone, Gwynn is a non-primary hitter) and 2 non-primary team starting pitchers and 1 non-primary relief pitcher. This way on a 25-man roster, at least 18 (more than 70%) of the players will come from your primary teams. This will alow potential trading of secondary players as well.

One thing, if I look sort players by rosters, will one player if he played on three different teams appear on each of the teams rosters. So effectively I will know easily what teams a player played for and then I will just have to make sure he played the majority of his seasons on the card with that team?

Lastly,

As for the Lotto, just do the pick three on a certain day after you have all twleve owners, and then the highest pick three goes first down to the lower pick three going last. Not sure if I can do it now, but I also included my pick three state above.

Lastly (I mean it this time), I'm, not sure if I am in agreement of the [sic]propietory trade.

Time to get down to business

Postby LMBombers » Sat Oct 22, 2005 12:28 pm

Honestiago, This is your theme as you had the idea for it. I think it is time for you to set down the rules for the league and lets start this thing up. Looks like everyone likes the two team idea so you are welcome to take my option A and fine tune it to your tastes and lets get it going. We will never have 12 people agree on every last detail so just state the rules and lets GET 'R DONE. 8)

Guys,

Take me off the list. Too many teams going currently with the addition of another autodraft soon.

Thanks,

Honestiago, Do you want someone else to set up the rules and start the sign up post? No one wants to steal your idea but if you would rather someone else get is started just say the word. Let's not let this good idea die, especially after so much interest has been expressed.
