Niners, sorry we swept you last night. Bad timing for us to get some breaks.

We actually got some pitching and scored some runs. Still w/o hitting HRs, but we scored.

Don't worry, we have one more shot at BigM, maybe we'll stay hot. :?

Meanwhile, I guess I waited to long to rest my starters for the stretch because Griffey pulled a 15 gamer the other night and will miss the First Round of the playoffs. Since my offense is held together by spit and glue that was a huge loss for the Shrinks.

Joe, I accept your apology. :) It appears you realize how it sounded, at least to me. I was wondering "why did he single[i:9dd1bc5790] me[/i:9dd1bc5790] out", but I understand now and it's completely [b:9dd1bc5790]behind[/b:9dd1bc5790] me. Not that I wasn't a "little" upset last night

Meanwhile back on the ball field, I think I have the WC clinched, as I hold an 12-9 record over AT. He would have to sweep me to tie that up, but I have a better R.D., which is the next tie-breaker. Both [b:9dd1bc5790]Niner[/b:9dd1bc5790] and [b:9dd1bc5790]Big [/b:9dd1bc5790]are 6 games back as well, but with them playing each other tonight (and what a big series that is) I can't see one of them winning 6 in a row.

So GL to both Niner and Big tonight. 8)

[quote:9d8573261b]I guess I could have said just as easy, how is Silver winning so many games with Astacio pitching 117 IP with 5.45 ERA and a 1.44 whip! Confused In fact, I said as much to Wineman on the phone the other day.
[/quote:9d8573261b]

I think the answer to that is pretty simple - HAL needs as least 1 whipping boy who comes into blowouts & pitches 3-4 innings and gives up 2-3 runs. Astacio is that guy for me now, and likely he & the other cheapies on my team would be doing a bit better if I hadn't cut Koplove. Koppy was getting shelled & it bugged me, but as soon as I cut him a) I started to lose a LOT more games, and b) my other cheap RPs ERAs "coincidentally" blew up. I have learned my lesson, just too late to correct it here & have to hope my SPs do well enough in playoffs that it doesn't matter....

Silver, that's exactly how I set up my pen. To have one or two (one mostly) R2 RP's who are used, and I'll use your words, as "whipping boys", and those guys will the majority of the time go approx. 3 innings and give up 2-4 runs. Occasionally you'll get a good outing and it's a bonus. When my whipping boy has a 5-6 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP it doesn't matter...he was used as he was intended to be used. :)

I see, kind of makes sense. So you set those guys to "mop up" and your other RPs don't come in before the 6th?

Joe, tell me you're not just now discovering the "mop up" setting?

Good luck tonight Niners!

I have a feeling I set-up my relievers a little differently than QK. Bell is not actually set on "mop-up" for me.

Let me see if I can explain it. Eaton is actually my mop-up guy. I have Jones set to close, and not enter before the 8th. I have Betancourt as set-up vs. both and the only thing checked on his card is "slow-hook". No "enter before a certain inning" is checked. 'Cause he could enter early and if pitching well stay in for 4 or 5 innings.

I've found out that HAL will use Bell in this instance for most of the innings when I'm losing, for a couple of reasons. 1) Timlin is an R1 and 2) Guerrier is checked with "quick hook" and 1-2 IP max. With Eaton as mop-up and those 2 other guys set as mentioned, and Betancourt in managerial settings as my main set-up, then that leaves Bell to garner all those innings in between, so to speak.

Another thing I've found with HAL in use of RP's. The less things checked on the card, the better. Once you start checking 4 or 5 boxes (quick hook, avoid LH or RH batters, don't enter before a certain inning, etc.) the worse HAL will do.

Let me give you another example. Say I have Street/Linebrink/Betancourt/Eldred as my 4 relievers. Which incidentally is my favorite pen this year generally speaking. Since Street is an R2 and I want him to have more innings than Jones for example...I will leave my RP settings in managerial settings completely blank. Why? Because with that pen I don't care exactly how the 4 relievers will be used, they're all good. HAL will manage that pen better with no settings and very little things checked on each card. Those 4 guys will have very similar stats, very similar save totals, etc. One guy (a 5th guy) will be mop-up in this case, too.

Now all my teams are NOT exactly set-up this way cause I'll be in wacky theme leagues, AL only leagues, Andres Blanco leagues, etc., etc...but this is my premise and I've found out it works pretty solidly.

23 runners stranded

And, Joe had me to win the division ....

Well, don't I feel stupid.

Jeep,

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I'll have to play with that. QK, do you do similarly?

Semper,

Ouch, sounds like a tough game. I didn't have you to win the division, not in terms of ratings, but the sims did. Remember, however, that WM didn't put in lineups for the East so you guys just might have a more "Hal friendly" lineup than Shrink does.
