In fact, in my NL only league, a manager noticed 60 games into it that he had an AL reliever on his roster. He sent a message to the entire league about it. I advised him to drop the player and move on. Nobody raised a stink.

this is kind of disturbing also[/color:d94a842d92]

doesnt anyone monitor their leagues

Now if he had had Albert Pujols on his roster all this time, I would have ruled a little differently

Pujols or Lopez I dont see the difference[/color:3b24395e34]

I think the commish made 2 mistakes here...

1. Not over-seeing EVERY team BEFORE the season started

Socal, there is no way that I - or anybody else, for that matter - would have the time to check everybody's roster for eligible players. Being the Commish is a volunteer job, and I already devote hours a week just to setting up leagues, sending out e-mails, determining draft orders, monitoring the boards, responding to questions/complaints, etc., etc. The leagues have to police themselves.

2. The punishment for cminton was not harsh enough

The punishment should always fit the crime. Cminton's crime was that he drafted an NL player in an AL-only league and didn't realize it until halfway through the season. As soon as he did, he dropped the player and replaced him with a .50 player, offered to have this team not count for his Tour standings and apologized for his error. It is clear to me that cminton didn't draft Lopez intentionally (he took him in the 15th round) and was suitably distressed that he had made a mistake. Unless some other facts come to light, I am satisfied with the ruling.

Wow. What a read. Just got back from a trip to Indy and found this not so nice thread. In my humble opinion, a lot of things went horribly wrong here.

1) cminton did a bad. I actually made a pickup early in the season in league 8 that never got to play a game before someone (I think Riggo) noticed it and I cut him before ever playing a game. It is easy to do, could happen to anyone here. However, this one went on for 81 games. Bad deal, especially since he is in 1st place.

2) gstanis did worse. Upset the balance of a league.

3) In my opinion, this should have been a board vote. Since there are no penalties called out in our rules, our board should have decided the penalties. This is the very reason PBTR quit the tour. PBTR, while not the angel, is a valuable asset to this game and one of the true greats. Our tour needs penalties assigned to the rules to assure no other future or present players have reason to feel like this is a "good ole boys" game or tour.

Like I said, just my opinion.

I agree with each of Socal's statements on this one. Would I have dumped my whole team over this? No, that's not the answer either. That said, it is the responsibility of the commissioner to police each team (if you haven't the time or the energy to do it correctly, don't voulunteer), as well as each player policing their own team.

"Now if he had had Albert Pujols on his roster all this time, I would have ruled a little differently". WHY???? Is there a rule that says NL players are forbidden, unless they are under X amount of dollars?

So now you folks have a ruined league for basically 4 reasons and as an outsider observer, the reasons why fall in the following order:

1. The inability to police one's own team (giving the benefit of the doubt that this was in fact an honest mistake)

2. The commissioner's failing in his responsibility to do the job the league entrusted in him.

3. The fact that either no one noticed this earlier, or failed to mention it due to the success of their own team while this was going on. I'm guessing here that one or two folks actually knew of this illegal roster but since it was helping their own cause, failed to bring it out in the open. I find it hard to believe not one of twelve managers did not see this earlier.

4. The total dumping of salary of one's team.

Jerlins - wrong on this issue. Teepack or no one could ever devote the time to check every roster, on every team, on every league. Remember, this is a volunteer position. Each league has a commish right? If anyone's, this is their job.

I thought this was going to die but then it popped up again and took a turn.

There is [b:f225757ed4]NO WAY [/b:f225757ed4]I would expect Tee as a volunteer commish to check every roster of every league. That's absurd and you're doing him a disservice by saying it.

There is a league leader (the person starting the league) that should have some responsibility and each owner in the league should. I read their league chat and there were enough people watching other rosters for mis-drafted players during the draft that it's a little late to absolve 11 other people of some part in this.

Postby Play By The Rules » Thu Sep 14, 2006 8:48 pm

Hey Stains I quit the Tour last year over a similar dispute. In my opinion yet another reason that the rules need to be written more clearly with a definite penalty for such an action. It was probably a mistake, maybe not, but I can understand how Stains feels. Seems to me as an innocent bystander the penalty was fair enough but I can also understand how Stains might not be happy. All this talk about "he's a long and respected member of the community so let's give him a break" is unfair and really annoying to a newcomer to the Tour. Who cares how long and respected you are, the rules are the rules for everyone!

However, even though I quit the Tour I finished out my active teams (even won one league I think) and didn't screw it up for the rest of the people. I don't think that was cool.

Stains my solution is not to play the Tour until the rules have been written in a clear and consistent manner. I'm much happier since I stopped, and I'm sure the folks on the Tour are too. I am intense like you and since this is supposed to be the be and end all of Strat, I think all penalties should be enforced. But most of the folks here are more instrested in the social aspect of this.

Fantasy Football can now played for lots of $$ - eventually SOM will as well - the actions & expressions by some owners in this thread suggest to me that some already think it is being played for by lots of $$. ;)

Interesting saga - then again every year the Tour has a couple of interesting stories (and I've been involved in at least one). Glad to see most people are responding rationally & respectfully - regardless of the stance they have taken. :)

Checking the league rosters is a 5 to 10 minute task max time frame. I don't see the difficulty in handling this. You can eliminate 90% of the players needing to be checked by sheer knowledge of the player, and the ones one is not sure of, well, those are the ones checked. Again, worse case scenario its a 1 minute per team job at the beginning of the season. I don't find this a difficult task at all. And please don't say something like "if you think it's easy, you try it" because I would not want the responsibility. I've mentioned the reasons in order of why I thought the league has failed. If other's opinions are not welcome here, it should not have been brought to public forum, and especially with the header it was started with.
