Fernando's bad year

Postby honestiago1 » Wed Sep 20, 2006 6:58 am

I'm certain I have Valenzuela's bad year (87, is it?). I've been scanning the FA wire, thinking of dumping him. I look at his card, though, and it's really not all that bad -- just that string of walks on 4-7,8,9 on the RH side. He's got K's all across his 6's on the right side, and 6-8 is not an automatic single chance. I have 1's up the middle, so that decreases his hits allowed (or should, anyway). Thing is, not a lot of good options available. Blyleven was dumped early, giving up hit per inning, 0-3, but 25 K's in 32 innings. This is a hitter's league, and I worry about getting Bert's big HR card. Also, I'd rather replace a lefty with a lefty. However, teh best available unused option is Tanana. I have a good Barker, a good Carlton, and Show was excellent in his first start (dropped Langston to get Eric). I'm wondering if I should go for Tanana (none of his years are awful) to maintain balance, or take a chance on Blyleven. If I go for Frank, I'd have extra money to beef up the bullpen or lineup. If I go for Bert, who may've been dumped too soon, I could have a great 1-2 in Carlton/Bly, should I make playoffs.

Any ideas?

why are you certain you have his bad year? Your WHIP is lower than his worst year after over 100 IPs. He has a winning record. In any case, I prefer Blylevans worst year to Fernando's worst year in any situation. He gives up HRs, but they are usually solo shots. Unless you are 100% sure you have Fernando's worst year, I would stick with him.

versus LH's

Postby honestiago1 » Thu Sep 21, 2006 12:19 pm

Fern is holding LH's to a .210 BA, substantially better at the time of the above writing, than against RH's. However, last night he pitched 8 in a loss, got 10K's and 5W's. RH BA against him is .267, not too bad. He seems to get rocked early, than hang in the game. It's hard to give him up, since he's pretty effective, and 7-5 (after a 7-1 start, though). The 10K game makes me want to hang onto him another start.

I have not had great luck with Fernando. Are any of the following available:

Deshiaes
Barker
Petry (2 good years, 3 dogs)
Lamp (he has 3 good GB cards, solid up the middle should help you)

I was thinking the same thing. His bad card really isn't pitiful. Just the walks. I have 2-1's behind him. It IS a hitter's league, however. I'm still sticking with him for awhile. He's giving me innings.

Three things to ponder.

1. A known devil is better than an unknown angel. He will be a .500 pitcher, maybe better. You could get worse if your throw him back. Yeah heis 7.19 mill, but if you don;t need the cash...why change.

2. He does eat innings, lots of them.

3. It may not be his worst card. It may be 1983

I'd switch him out, hell even Tim Lollar has a 40% chance of being as good as Fernando's worst year. There's lots of cheaper guys out there that can give you the same or better results. Use the extra money to get a lefty killer, or give Benzinger some ABs for Cruz in LF vs. lefties.

Benzinger

Postby honestiago1 » Sat Sep 23, 2006 9:13 am

Thought about getting him in the lineup, given his good start. Thing is, I know what Cruz I got (the 5R). I picked up Driessen to play 1B, b/c I like his speed, walks, and he hits lefties well. If he con't work, though, I may slide Todd into the lineup. Cruz is hurt, so we'll see what Benz can do. Team is sliding: 1-9 last 10, 2-15 last 17. Still way in the wild card, of course, and early.

Fern: I'd rather stick with him than Lollar, for now. But if I get desperate, may switch them out. It's a hitter's league, so I think my bullpen is going to be important all year long. Just hoope we hit some more.
