One way to ensure "player rotation," is to have player "retirements." Nine of the manager's players are put on a list. A pick three is chosen for each team. The last digit of the pick three is used. If it is a zero, no one retires. If it is anything else, that means that a player has retired. Refer to the 1-9 list the manager has proferred, that # player "retires" for good. The manager gets an additional draft choice to fill the slot.
EX: I have a list of nine keepers, which I number as follows: 1) WClark, 2) Valenzeula, 3) FWhite, 4) Downing, 5) Luzinski, 6) Bailor, 7) Barker, 8) Henke, 9) Whitaker; My 10th player is Roger Clemens, who I protect. My pick three comes out 365. This means Luzsinki has retired.
SECOND EX: Same list, but my pick 3 is 180. Since the last digit is 0, no one retires.
LONG TERM INJURIES TO START THE SEASON: The same thing could be done with long-term injuries, using the first two digits. The first digit indicates a possible injury. If it is not a zero, a player is injured. The second digit, times 5, indicates what % of the year he misses.
EX: using the above list and lotto number, 365, means that White is injured to start the season. He can come back after 30% of the games have been played (middle digit 6 x 5%). This means he misses 49 games. He will come back during the series that features game #50.
Something to thing about. Another way of doing it is to have the % maybe be the second digit x 3%. This would add some variety to yearly rosters. The "serious injury lotto" could also be played at the halfway mark, but modified. EX: first digit of 1 indicates someone is hurt. Second digit indicates who. Third digit X 5% is how long. More complicated, though. Probably better to start off the year that way, though, because players are going to get injured anyway during the year. But imagine losing one of your pitchers for 30-40 games. It'd be rough. Couple a key retirement with a serious injury, and there could be real probs for some teams, during some years. We could use BOTH of these with pick 3's from different days.
THE ABOVE: Just something to add variety. "Seriously" injured players could be shifted to the "minors" without fear that anyone would pick them up.
