Keeper league--with variations (well, MAYBE)

Here's what I think we should do

Postby honestiago1 » Mon Sep 25, 2006 6:31 am

Think we should go with core players and the "sudden retirement" rule (using pick 3, as above). We can also go with decade league rules, if everyone wants to, though I think the random retiring thing covers a lot of that and adds variety.

SERIOUS INJURY: I'm dropping this. Instead of a "serious injury," we can work in a "free agency" wrinkle using the pick 3's first two digits. Something like:

first digit: 0-1=lose a player to free agency, regardless of record; 2-4 lose a player to free agency if team had losing record; 5-9=no free agents that year

second digit=the player # who becomes an FA. If player becomes an FA, THEN retires (in other words 2nd and third digit are the same), player tested the waters, then hung 'em up).

EX: If my pick three were 379, and my record was a losing one, I'd lose player #7 on my list. If my record were a winning one, I'd lose no one. However, the third digit of 9 indicates that player #9 has suddenly "retired."

We'd need a 2-round draft each year to cover lost players and retirings, meaning we'd add two core players a year instead of one.

DECADE RULES: We can institute this with the regular decade league rules, but then we'd REALLY be cycling through players. However, I will put it up to a vote (we can always vote on rules again as the seasons roll by).

ADDED CATEGORIES:
FA: do you prefer the above free agency rules (or a variation, TBD)?
Dec--do you want to institute regular "decade league" rules.

CHANGED CATEGORY:
# of Core PLayers (CP): choose between 10 and 15.

DROPPED CATEGORY:
SeriousInjury

Another way to do it

Postby honestiago1 » Mon Sep 25, 2006 6:39 am

If we go with a DECADE league, as described in rules, we could throw out "sudden retirement," and use a pick 3 for free agents only.

EX:

first digit:
0-1: 1 FA, regardless of record
2-4: +1 FA, if losing record
5-9: no FA's that year.

Though the chart effects are cumulative, the maximum # of FA's per season is two. This means the better my team does, the less chance I have of losing players. Losing teams have a 50% chance of losing at least one player. They can get them back during the "draft phase" (meaning teams can draft FA's instead of, or in addition to rookies).

Would this add some variety?

here,s another version of variety

2 sets of seasons, each 4 seasons long and an option of a 3rd set:

1st set:
4 seasons alternate between DH and no DH at 60 million with 6 players to be kept by each team and the rest to be filled in by the autodraft.

2nd set:
4 seasons same as above with an 80 million cap with 8 keepers per team, and,

the 3rd set:100 million with 10 keepers alternating between DH and no DH.

the retirements will come on a players last season played on his card.

i think it's simple to keep up with and continually changes season to season....
you have the chance to re-build your team each season with your favorite players remaining intact.........any thoughts on this idea?

I'd prefer the Decade League rules pretty much unmodified. It seems to have worked well in BC Manager's league as they're about to play 1988 (8th season) with pretty much the original managers from 1981 (I think). If it ain't broke don't fix it.

The free agent rule could be fun but I don't think teams with losing records should be penalized. I think that penalizing the losing teams would be more realistic but one of the challenges of a keeper league is keeping all of the owners year after year. To lose 2 top notch players (if you're really unlucky) to free agency after a 90+ loss season would be pretty tough to handle.

If we go with free agency I think it should be an equal chance among all teams - or maybe penalize the playoff teams to equalize things.

Here's the deal, 'K?

Postby honestiago1 » Mon Sep 25, 2006 8:43 pm

Since I started this thread, let's do this:

This will be a decade league. I'll need someone to be the point man on player pools and draft issues (volunteers).

After we fill the 12 slots, we will put forth proposals concerning:

-Free Agency
-variable Salary Cap
-Pitchers batting

We will then vote on them all before going on.

Hope this sounds okay to everyone.

I'll be glad to volunteer for whatever you need honestiago. Look over the rules in the other league to get ideas on rules for this league.

Here is a spreadsheet that Yountfan created for the original Decade league. I helped edit it a little. The players in yellow actually played for more than one team that particular year. The Decade league they are doing is team based. I'm not sure how we are doing it in this league. Either way the spreadsheet should be a useful tool.

Just to clarify for you fellas, we actually have two Decade keeper leagues going. One is a basic decade, the rules for which you have bumped. That's the one that's about to start season 8 (1988). The other one is a team-based Decade league. It's a little more complicated and we've finished season 1.

So, the link you've provided there is for the second league. Somewhere there is a link to the basic Decade league spreadsheet. If you can't find it I'm sure YF would be happy to provide it.

I'm in, if it is largely Decade based (not as keen on the latest version based on Team Franchises). If the vote does go for random FA (and I'm not for it) could we do it prior to the season for the end of the season? (i.e. we know who we are going to lose rights to and just like in the real world maybe trade a guy to a contender who we are possibly going to lose anyway and we can draft from the new crop with that in mind)
