Keeper league--with variations (well, MAYBE)

How about at the beginning of season #2, managers post 9 players on a list. We have a pick 3 everyone uses.

-If the first digit is a 1 or 2, that is the number of FA's for each team. If it is a 3-0, I have no FA's that year.

-The second and third digit indicate the player # on the list that is an FA. For example, say I had a 258, and Larkin and Reynolds were my #5 and #8 players, respectively. They'd be the two impending FA's during the year.

During the year, you can accrue salary points to resign FA's, as follows:

-every 20 wins=1M to resign FA's
-Playoff appearance=+1M
-Finals appearance=+2M
-World Series victory=+3M

EX: Say I find out early in the season I am losing Larkin (5.46M) and Harold Reynolds (3.02M. B/c I am in a tight playoff race, and they are hitting well, I hang on to them. I end up winning 81 games, barely making the payoffs. As luck (and some great pitching) have it, I advance to the finals, where I am pummeled by LM's team. :wink: Given the above, I would accrue: 4.05M for # of wins (82/20), +1M for the playoffs and +2M for advancing to the Finals. I have accrued a total of 7.05M for the purposes of resigning my own FA's. Unfortunately, my FA's are valued at 8.48M. I'm going to lose Reynolds. If I had won the series, I'd be able to resign both my guys. But Harold just wants too much money.

Second EX: The same situation, above, but I know I will not make the playoffs. I trade Larkin to a contender for his draft picks. I end up with 78 wins, which translates to 3.9M. I will be able to resign Reynolds.

The same thing could be done with each team's individual pick 3's, then each GM would have different issues to contend with.

Something to think about (I'm REALLY looking for "variations" in the way the game is played--since this is random, it seems fair to everybody, if ya ask me).

Would this be a fair and somewhat realistic way to approach this?

This ia a good group. Billings, horse, AK, LM, it's good to see you here (which one of you is joining me in the cellar?).

Anyone have any suggestions for team names? I thought about something super cheesy, like using a combination of our birth city and the mascot of our high school. Or current city and mascot of favorite teams. Anyone have any suggestions on team names (besides us creating our own strange ones?). "Classic" team names (sure, I'll be the Spiders).

I don't really care for Honestiago's proposal of free agency. It sounds too complicated for me. Personally I like the rules just like they are spelled out in the other thread. Every team will be changing from year to year anyway with retirements and trades. Also even if you get to keep a player for a while it doesn't mean that you get his best year each year. Some years he might not be very good and then you have to decide to keep him all year long for the following year or cut your losses and go in a different direction.

Sounds like fun to me! :D

Where are the almighty Decade rules anyway? I have the excel sheet. I notice most lpayers played all the way through the 80s. Doesn't seem like we'll lose very many to retirement, at least not until the "mid-80s." What year do we start in, anyway? 80?

I bumped the rules. They are right under this topic. We start in 1981 as there aren't enough eligible players to start in 1980.

Being 8 years into my original Decade league, I can say the original rules work quite well. There's plenty of player movement due to the FA rules, rookies and retirements. Yes, some of the top tier players end up on the same team for their entire span, but that used to happen in RL as well. On my own team, I've had Mattingly and Raines since they both broke into the league earlier in the decade. Other than that, none of my the players from my early teams are still on my team.

It's your own league, so I don't want to influence, but I think if you go with the original rules, you'll find it a very worthwhile league. Several of the guys in my league consider the best they've ever been in. But perhaps you should ask if they'd make any changes.

-How about, "Draft ANY player in the set, regardless of year with your first pick" (we'll call it the "out of time" selection).

-Pitcher bats all the time? (I think that'd be better, since it expands the player pool, & makes you take defense, defensive replacements and players who play multiple positions into greater account. You gotta have a deeper bench, and the bullpen becomes more important. (we should really debate this -- why are we all so hung up on the DH?)

-you can't keep any sub-1M player (as opposed to not keeping only the .75's). Why should anyone be allowed to carry Wathan all the time? Better yet, how about you can't keep any sub-2M player? Cycle those babies around!

-How about, you can keep ANY player on your roster, INCLUDING the .75's? (Why not? What if I WANT Wilfong every year?)

-shuffle divisions each year, or every other year? (as determined by "Pick 3's").


And now, the OUTLANDISH PROPOSALS:

-Any team with Daryl Boston gets special dispensation (I don't know why).

-Every team MUST carry one "time bomb reliever" (Ron Davis, for example).

-All teams MUST carry a 1-8 or 1-9 runner, and bat him lead off for one series.

-Keith Moreland must be traded continually throughout the season, so that he cycles through ALL teams. One of the teams must play him at Catcher (and LIKE it!).

-Any team with Phelps, Lowenstein and Gamble must set them to "avoid righty pitching," and bat them in the "versus LH's" lineup. This team automatically receives a first round pick the following season.

-Any team with Carmelo Martinez, Carmen Castillo, and Don Carman receives a free candy bar (a caramelo, perhaps).

-Speaking of: Reggie bars all around for anyone who plays the high-priced, "no range, big gun" OF of Canseco (LF), Valentine (CF), Jackson (RF).

-The "Defying Convention award" to any mager who plays the kingdome and drafts the following IF: Rose (1B), Flynn (2B), Bowa (SS) and Oberkfell (3B). If coupled with the above OF, the manager receives a free foot rub, or a year's supply of spandex (why? why NOT?).


ANYWAY...

Sorry for all the additional craziness. I just feel like the thread name is false advertising. :D

P.S. 1981 is first year? Hmmmm....that changes my strategy considerably.

i think theres still room for variety.

how many keepers per season.the lower the keepers the more free agents there are.( 7 comes to mind---pitchers- hitters--tough choices there)

flip floppin between DH and no DH.adds a variety each season.

a sliding salary scale. different each season,or every two seasons,or 5 and 5.whatever.

lets get some more thoughts on these and other variables and put it in stone.
