Ants Sitting on a Turd Roll

Postby Semper Gumby » Fri Sep 22, 2006 10:34 am

Damn!

Did HAL toss me a few turds this season -

Pedro (worse card) DUMPED

Gorman (worse card) DUMPED (.208 BA / sub .720 OPS)

Henke (worse card) DUMPED (5+ ERA / 1.5+ WHIP with 7 blown saves)

Fisk (near worse card) DUMPED

Rice (worse or near worse card) - thank god he hasn't stunk it up yet!

Hell ... poor Andre and Davey must feel like two ants sitting on a turd waiting for it to roll over and sink them.

Here is to my late season pick up of Fred Lynn's 1980 card (come on OBP)

that's going to make me hate him even worse that I already do.

i can't figure out my team. i have a solid offense (good OBP for the Jack), my pen is good and my pitchers are slightly better than decent. my run differential is in my favor. yet, i can't friggin' win.

i pulled a sykes favorite (zane smith) off the scrap heap. never used him before, but he doesn't have ballpark HRs on most cards, so he may do OK in the bomber division.

Fred Lynn

Postby Semper Gumby » Fri Sep 22, 2006 3:32 pm

Using Fred's numbers for his stint in Jack Murphy, Fred has really one card that sticks out (1980). His 1983 card is the worse but Fred should have hit a few more HRs if he had it here.

In reviewing the numbers, it seems like a solid card for a balance park. Obviously not the best card for the Kingdome with just 4 BPHRs versus RHPs and 0 BPHRs & "w" vs LHPs.

Unfortunately, Gorman stunk it up for me in the line-up. He had two turd cards and I assume one found its way into my roster. With his sub .730 OPS playing ~38 games at the Kingdome and the bulk in hitter parks, says the $6M I paid for him - not well spent.

He couldn't find first base if I drew a map for him and colored first base in bright red.

With Fred's higher OBP and no HR threat, I might just stop hitting 1-run HRs now.

It sucks leading the league in 1-run shots. Of course, I would rather have Davey Lopes show me his 1.394 OPS vs. LHPs against the RHPs. :(

Cutting Deadweight Too

Jabs - again show us the way.

After his serious roster alterations, I felt the need to match smarts with Jabs and sent a few Land Cruiser guys packing.

Of course, I waited too long to show D. Strawberry the door with his Year 1 card.

We'll see how Tim Raines responds to Ozzie ball and maybe he can get on bases more than 1:5 per PA.

I'll save anyone the trip on Greg Minton's card (like Year 5).

Update on Fred Lynn .... he didn't disappoint us with his first vacation (yes, Jab had the right year card guess here). So far, Fred has been batting around .450 BA with 10 doubles in less than 70 PAs. :D

October Sifter

Postby Semper Gumby » Mon Oct 02, 2006 7:20 am

Goodness - 3 rounds of elimination baseball and barely a peep from this league.

With all the transaction activity, the league appears like a duck on the pond - quiet and grace above the waterline but madness underneath the surface.

Perhaps someone will f@rt and the league will report it.

Gone from my roster

[b:8cfdaae332]Pick[/b:8cfdaae332] (I think)
1 - Pedro G
2 - Strawberry
5 - Henke
6 - G. Thomas
8 - Fisk

This team has been bobbing up and down (mostly down as of late). However, I hope the addition of Fred Lynn and Tim Raines from Jab's team brings a little luck for me.

Well, there's been a cacophony of f@rting on the Vampire Bats this round...and bats aren't designed for jet propulsion. I didn't expect to get far in this March Madness thing when I started out, as my first round team was only my second 80s team, but I surprised myself and made it to round three. Now, my team couldn't stink worse if I tried to field a bunch of stiffs! THESE BATS SUCK!

Well, Nolan Ryan's a stud, and I can't complain bitterly about Dave Parker or Eric Davis...but three guys do not an effective team make. It is no fun watching the string of losses, but then I was watching others grapple with this problem in the first two rounds...those who are no longer present here. So I can't complain too loudly - I wasn't supposed to be here in the first place!

:x

So now I've blown up what was supposed to have been my killer infield D, just to see if something can be done to stop the bleeding - Reynolds and Burleson had the 1 ranges, but that's about it. So now I'll see if my pitching takes a bigger hit than any boost my offense may experience with the addition of Templeton and Ray...

This has been a really strange league for figuring out the cards. I always knew I had a good Carew but until the last 25 games he hadn't shown any power. Now I'm sure it's his best card. Sandberg started hitting tons of triples so I thought it was 84. Then he stopped and started hitting homers so I thought it was 1990. Injury has shown he's one of the other years. Phelps has 7 triples so it must be 1986? It could be but 6 of them are against righties so there's no proof. Rob Murphy has been incredible in limited innings but much better vs. righties. HAL barely uses him against lefties for some reason.

Too bad the end of season card reveals aren't shown for the free agents. I'll bet we've dropped some pretty good ones.

I'm damn sure I dropped all my turds (injuries / key events) and would do another round if I didn't suspect worse lays waiting in the free agent snake pile for me.

I know Strawberry had his Year 1 card, and Pedro his crappy "drop me" card (Moody tried him and reached the same conclusion).

Henke gave me his worse season (80% chance of lights out and I fish lights on).

Gorman - the one season he couldn't hit water if he fell out of boat - I get him. He teased me with the glove but Fred Lynn's availability made Gorman a past tense player.

Fisk - I get his HR card in one bracket and toss him when he gets out HR by everyone. He gets in the smaller park and I get the one season he can't hit a ball out of the infield. I can live with his low slug but then he doesn't hit and gets hurt every series or so.

Spanky - I have his .300 season card and he responds with hitting like a girl.

Rice - I get his best card last season - hits like a girl and now I have his worse card and hits like a college star. I know it will get worse soon.

Thornton and Lopes - I get their best seasons but I would trade that for an average season out of Pedro and Strawberry.

HoJo - Damn!

Raines - I think Jab had bad dice but Tim's BA/OBP has to be better than Strawberry's

Pitching?

CRAP

I have Anderson's best card and maybe Higgie's

Jesse does great every series and than has a brainfart

Gossage - what card do we have where he is lights out against LHBs and forgetaboutit when RHBs hit?

Holland - poo!

Crim - nice every other series!

Gone Dark

Postby Semper Gumby » Tue Oct 03, 2006 11:07 am

Damn ... this league is a little too quiet for an elimination series which is long past the 100 game mark.

The Land Cruisers team had a recent engine tune-up (I'm carbureted guy in a fuel injected world) for the last quarter mile.

While [b:64b754a34a]Raines [/b:64b754a34a]and [b:64b754a34a]Lynn [/b:64b754a34a]will never hit more than 10 HRs between them over the last 54 games, I hope to see a boost in runs scored as they both can generate some .400 in OBP which beats the lead fuel that burned sour in [b:64b754a34a]Strawberry[/b:64b754a34a] and [b:64b754a34a]Thomas[/b:64b754a34a].

I feel the valve job on the bullpen set-up is working now and we'll see how [b:64b754a34a]Crim[/b:64b754a34a] responds to getting more work out of the bullie. [b:64b754a34a]Jessie[/b:64b754a34a] is getting better but still can't find the groove to work 1-2-3 innings.
