I've had some luck with Hargrove as a good cheap option. It helps if he's on a team where you're making up his lack of power at a traditionally non-power position (e.g., Sandberg at 2b).

Hrbek gets overlooked many times for no real good reason. His 5.23 salary isn't half bad and you can fill a power position with a solid performer.

His value comes in play when you list him low on your draft card and get him because everyone else is going for Murray, Mattingly, Clark higher up on their draft card. That allows you to list alternative studs in your top 5 picks.

Here's a name that hasn't been mentioned yet: Mike Aldrete

He's a cheap favorite of mine when all else fails. Useful in all 5 years. In '87 and '91, he's got tremendous OBP vs RH, with '87 being his best overall year OPS wise. In '86, he's got very little HR power, but lots of doubles and solid OBP vs RH. '88 is his worst OPS year, but he still has good OBP vs LH and mediocre OBP vs RH....not to mention positive clutch vs both. And finally, '93 is his best HR power year, with 5 BP HRs vs RH and the usual solid OBP. He's got a solid glove at 1B (3e8) and he's versatile too, as he plays both corner OF spots.

Not saying I'd draft him, but not a bad alternative if you're strapped for cash.

Get a bead on

Jason Thompson (always available)
Ted Simmons (use at 1b and carry one other catcher)
Andre Thornton (can provide punch in the smaller park)

John Kruk can be useful, mostly good-excellent OBP and a couple of his cards work very well in high-BPHR environments, so there's some power there too.

I've used Mike Hargrove a few times. Mostly at DH though.
