I think it is also a factor that causes a lot of inflated ERA's for very good pitchers. That's why I seldom check that stat. With pitchers I usually check how well they have performed in the majority of games. A few big blowouts will balloon even the best of pitcher's ERA, but the true indicator is W's and Saves.
With position players, I do the same thing.
For example, players like Wilkerson may not even bat over .200 for the season, but he may still score 110 runs with 75-90 RBI and 30+ HRs from the leadoff or #2 spot. IMO, that is what matters to me. ERA and BA are overrated IMO.
