Johnny Ray, Marty Barrett, or???

Postby kptnfmrs » Sat Oct 21, 2006 8:17 am

Pickings are slim at second base. I'm in Yankee Stadium. Season hasn't started yet. Do I stick with Ray, or go with Barrett for about the same$$$? Frank White is available but $4mil seems like a lot to pay for defense... even at 2B. BP1B in Yankee Stadium won't help him.

Right now, I don't have a defensive sub for Ray. The usual guys (Lind, Flynn) are available.

Others available are: Trillo, Backman, Gagne, Dauer, Gantner, Phillips.

I have about $3mil but want to save some of it for later.

I wouldn't save any money for later. You never know who will be good and who won't. Some of your high priced guys may stink, giving you cash to spend. F White supplies "D" and some pop. If going strictly for "D", I like Lind. Trillo is similar with a little more offense but a little higher priced. Unless you really need the offense, I would give one of the "2" rated guys a shot over Ray, unless maybe you have a great defensive SS.

I should have mentioned - I have Burleson at SS.

Right now, my A lineup looks like this:

C - Wynegar
1B - Hrbek
2B - ?
3B - Pedro G
SS - Burleson
LF - Luz
CF - Dykstra
RF - Dewey
DH - Have Wiggins/Sheets/Mulliniks

Also, I lied earlier... Have Julio Cruz as def sub for Ray.

Or Wilfong.

How about DHing Pedro and finding a better 3B?

I use Ray alot with great success, you've got a good "D" SS with liitle pop,
Ray's 30 to 40 doubles can come in handy....As a last resort I've use
Backman/cruz or Backman /Phillips platoon, B/P is expensive but, "3" D
can be excellent "O"....

Frank White can be nice though.

But in this scenario, I agree with YountFan. Get an inexpensive guy and see if you can find a better DH.

Do you guys like Bonilla @ DH?
How about Glenn Davis?
Phelps, Kruk and Al Oliver are also available.

Is Backman better than Ray to platoon with Cruz? Only a half mil difference.

The razor sharp intellects in this league have already seen fit to snap up Oester and Wilfong. I've used Ray several times and he's been good more often than not. Guess I have a soft spot in my head for him.

Ray all the way, Wally has like zero slugging and Ray will hit 30 2bs.

Bonilla can be good, Davis too. It all depends on what you need. But DHing HoJO can getting someone like Geatti or Jacoby might be a better answer. I lot of folks like Oliver also.

Ray and Lopes are probably the best two "3" 2Bs. I wouldnt even consider any other "3s." Of the guys mentioned I would go with White. Bad OBP, but lots of 2Bs, decent power and great fielding. Oester and Wilfong with Cruz is probably the best way to go. I doubt Remy is available, but in some autoleagues....

Bonilla is solid.
