unlucky cards?

I guess I should have said, I always get his worst card, which is better than many other pitchers. That said, I'd rather have a decent Barker card at half the price than shell out all that dough for the walk/HRA's Soto has in his "bad year."

I have had bad luck with Mattingly lately...even with his best years he is hitting fewer than 20 hrs and no 2Bs.

It seems like Dwight Evans and Dale Murphy rountinely underperform for me. Someone may want to check Dewey's '85 card, because he never comes remotely close to his actual stats. Dale Murphy seems to either give me the crap year or bat under .250, even in his good years.

I still would not change the mystery card for anything though. :D

I think it's worth remembering that even if you've had a player in a few season, it's still a pretty small sample. I felt like through my first several seasons, I hardly ever saw a good Dale Murphy year, even on other teams, and I had to drop him the two times I had him. But lately he's generally been quite good. On a current team of mine, he has a .958 OPS in Yankee after 95 games. Dewey Evans has been either really good or like lukewarm mush for me. On the same current team, he's really good--though an injury shows I've got his 87 card, which is a whole different ballgame than his 85.

I've seen Yount be terrible for half a season, and then turn around. You never know....I do seem to get into stretches, sometimes, however, where the same player will be good for me several years in a row, then turn bad... and vice versa.

...and by the way, doesn't the fact that Yount went down for 15 games mean he's in his off year? All the others have more than 600 PA. Not sure I'd keep him under those circumstances--a long injury at the start of the season. If you drop (or trade?) him, it would free up a lot of cash as well as cover games amounting to almost a tenth of the season. The injury might be a blessing in disguise, given the early info it gives you.

I know what your saying Outta and agree with your thinking but........Who do you think is on the FA list? Hubie Brooks or Franco at best? Or would you go with a cheap 2 fielder like Ozzie Guillen or the like. The drop off from Yount's worst season to the above choices might not be worth letting him go.

I agree that it's a tough call--there aren't a lot of great options at SS, esp early in the season, and Yount's worst seaons is a lot better than most SS best. What might tempt me toward the drop would be the 15 game injury. He's basically out for a good chunk of the year, so that might push me a bit harder to cash in--since you get the cash right away on an injured player. But it's not a clearcut case and the final call might depend on what's available at SS and also what might turn up on the FA table.
For example, if somebody dropped Eddie Murray after 30 AB, which I've seen happen, and I didn't have the money to grab him, I might be tempted to use the cash to make a pickup like that, and use a plug-in at SS.

I hear you Outta, but when Yount went down for 15 there was absolutely nuthin' on the FA wire. All the 1s were taken, Franco and Smalley were taken, Schofield and Guillen were taken, etc. So I decided that even though I'm now sure I'm overpaying for Yount, I'm better off keeping him because he's a 1 at short and he still has a significantly better OPS than anyone available. I'd managed to have a good season previously in a similar situation when I got Sandberg's worst year, so I thought it was worth a shot. So far, it's not really working (the team's 25-29) but it might be because I also got stuck with Gary Carter's worst year (I had to dump him for Hassey because I wasn't scoring any runs) and, apparently, Blyleven's worst year (i.e., all three of my top three tanking--poor me!).
