GBBR(Good Buds Bragging Rights ) League

Postby Jeepdriver » Tue Oct 24, 2006 8:31 am

Well there goes that 162 win season I was shooting for. Na, I 'm real glad to take 2 last night, my other team that started last night went 0-3 and I had a bad night overall for all my teams, incl. a Game 7 loss in the Finals.

Thank goodness for my friend Lee, who has always felt bad for me on these occasions, and therefore allowed me to save complete embarassment with two wins. :)

Five runs in the eighth inning of that first loss. Latroy Hawkins, what more can I say. Can't even get the lefties out. Triple, single, walk, homerun to Big Papi. Bold prediction, Hawkins will lower his ERA from 32.64 in his next outing.

Course it would have helped if I had gotten around to setting my pitchers up for HAL.

DOH!

I actually had all my settings in place for opening day - Obviously, that wasn't any help at all...Better go back to being haphazard.

leehaak,

As someone who has been away for a while (no 03/05 squads) what do you think of the differences between 01/02 & 06?

Well, I can see that HAL is not going to be one of my "Good Buds" this season.

In just the two series so far he hits me with:

Polanco - 10 Gamer
Ordonez - 10 Gamer
C. Jones - 7 Gamer

I HAD depth but I don't know if I planned on ALL 3 of those at the SAME time.

AT, three big differences, with admittedly a limited size sample:

1. Better pricing of players. I've spent a good deal of time now with the ratings disk and the various spreadsheets I created back in the day. The deviation from expected salaries aren't nearly what they were in '01 especially. I think it forces you to specialize if you want to do anything better than a few percentage points either side of .500. I think if you played in all 'even' parks, your going to end up very close to .500 if you have any clue about team formation. My best guess is that managers who understand park effects and opponents will do better. Injuries are priced more accurately as well.

2. Better control, HAL seems to behave better now. Specialty pitchers seems to perform better. That's where the bargains appear to be, in pitchers that specialize and fit well with your park.

3. Better managers. I think the overall quality of play has improved, even in the public leagues. I'll reserve judgement on that until I get more experience, but it's an observation.

Bottom line, I doubt I'm going to hit that .550 mark I had in '01 ever again for 20+ teams. Pretty tough to do.

I look forward to playing in more vets leagues as I get familiar.... of course just in time for the new set to come out, which at least will even the playing field a bit!

No argument there leehaak! I would have to agree with all of your assessment. :) I am just glad I've been able to keep my Win % between .510 & .520. :)

I thought this was supposed to be a "good buds" league. You guys have beaten me 7 out of 9 games!! What kind of buds are you guys? It is my opinion, you are all kind of mean!! :x I think I will take my team and go to another ballfield!! 8)

Cannot blame me - I'm in another division and I've allowed the visitors to win 6 of 9. ;)
