Is this possible for Pete Rose?

wait a second... I'm having a vague flashback.... could it be that rolls such as

"9- TR 1-3
fly(cf)B 4-20"

could result in an inside-the-park homer if a 1-3 is rolled and the runner would try to stretch against the center fielder's arm?

Ah... I see where the confusion is from. The "runner" being referred to there isn't the batter-runner; it refers to a runner who was already on base. In other words, the runner trying to advance on a single from 1st to 3rd or 2nd to home, or on a double from 1st to home. There's no provision in the board game for the batter-runner to "stretch."

I'm not sure that this is true... it refers to the lead runner, which could be the batter. Of course, for the * or ** results, it means a runner who was already on base. But for the (Xf) kind of results, I think it can refer to the batter if nobody was on base -- I'm pretty sure that this is true in the board game, too (at least, I remember rolling the extra die).

That's how we used to play it face to face back in 1985.

BTW, I think Rose is N Power against righties in 1978.

Well, you may have played that way, but it wasn't correct :P "Lead runner" implies a runner other than the batter-runner, both in the SOM rules and in baseball in general, so far as I know.

To test it, just play a game or two on the computer. You'll quickly see that you don't get to try to stretch every bases-empty single, double or triple without stars after them. The game would be pretty crazy if you could, honestly; wouldn't work right.

I've played hundreds of games on the computer, but if you refuse to believe me on that and don't have the computer game, you can e-mail SOM. They do actually tend to respond to board game rules questions, where they don't always respond to other e-mails. Guess they're more fun.

A TR3 results on a range-4 OF on a split of 1 and on a range-5 OF on a split of 1 and 2.

The RP (rare play) result in the super advanced e-rating chart results in an inside the park homerun.

Says something about two outfielders colliding and the ball rolling to the wall.

Thanks for all of the comments... I think I'll just hang onto Rose for now then and see what pans out.

Since there seemed to be some interest when we were initially discussing this, I thought I'd update you on Rose's progress. First, after saying that I'd hang onto Rose for awhile, I dumped him the next day because I had a strong hunch that he actually had his '83 card (despite the home run). I was happy that another team immediately picked him up, because now I can test my hunch without actually having to suffer much (hopefully he'll stay around until the end of the season so I can know for sure, but I think that's probably unlikely to happen).

Rose's numbers after 115 AB total are .209 .252 .283 with exactly 3 extra base hits (2 doubles and his one mystery homer), and with a better balance toward lefties. I had him in Fenway and he's now in Wrigley. Given these numbers and his inclination toward lefties, I'm really feeling like he has his stinky '83 card (which is 2L)... so, that means that his one home run had to be an ITP homer... so much for using home runs as a "reveal" (I'm finding out that triples aren't much better!).
