OK, I'm really sorry for the delay. I figured you had already gotten it twice!

I'm blaming this whole retched season on Dave Parker. 221 .275 .384 is not what I paid nearly 6 million for as my main RBI guy.

Actually, I think it's a conspiracy by TSN ALL my teams have tanked in the last two weeks. I've gone from a .548 win% to .530. The last two nights alone, I've gone 10-17 and 11-16. You know it's going to be bad when the first three teams you check all got swept. Especially when of those 9 games, you gave up 0 earned runs in 3 of them one earned run in two more, and still lost.

Definitely a conspiracy!!

yeah, it's a right wing conspiracy against all those living outside the US! Big M isn't doing all that well either! ;)

Seriously though I feel for you man, that's one TOUGH night. I hate when that happens. Puts me in a bad mood. :(

As for us, we've clinched a playoff spot and are guaranteed of playing the team that currently has the second best record in the league, meanwhile the team with the third best record will be playing a team that's currently under .500. Something's wrong with this picture.

Course, PBTR probably has the biggest beef, the guy is tied for the fourth best record in the league (despite playing in the toughest division) and is all but eliminated from the playoffs.

Interesting.

I'm not sure if that beef is bigger than the one I have being the absolute LOSER IN THE EAST DIVISION...

My team is admittedly not good... as reflected by a 60-93 record  but by being in a divsion with three other teams that have combined for a .591 winning percentage (266-184 record), I'd say my team has a beef of its own :x

Actually... my record in the tough division (27-36 or .429) is much better than that outside the division (33-57 or .367), so I guess my team, as weak as it is, does rise to the occassion when trying to influence the division race. I've managed to go 11-10 vs. pbtr's, 10-11 vs. petro, while only 6-15 against joethejet... if they petro & jtj had equal performance against me, it'd only be a 2 game lead for jtj's club instead of the current 6.

My own silver lining of sorts

Please explain...

Postby Munich_Man » Thu Nov 09, 2006 5:26 am

Forgot that some people don't read league mail so reposting this here...

Can someone please tell me what happened to this team? The first 1/2
of the season I went 43-41, reasonably respectable. The 2nd half I have
gone 24-48 (so far) and tumbled from 1st to 4th place.

Can Mr. Parker's atrocious season be the reason, or is there some
deeper cause.

All my similar teams, some almost identical, have won 85-100 games
and all have made the playoffs. According to Joe's ratings this was the
5th best team in the league, and in the first half I has exactly the 5th
best record, and I lead the league in pitching, which is right where I like
to be.

Instead of the just better than .500 team that I expected, and which I
had the first half, I'm on pace for my 2nd worst record EVER (ATGI,II,III,
lost 99 once)

Is there some deeper cause that you stat gurus can identify, or can we
attribute it to bad rolls, bad karma, Global Warming, what?

Comments welcome.

I don't know about you Rick, but I can chalk up my team's lack of success to some darned good managing, in my division and otherwise.

I never had a manager that I would intentionally "duck"- that is, not enter a league that I saw them in until I was sure they wouldn't be in my division, or avoid that league altogether. Well, that has changed now with Petrosian. He just DESTROYED me with his incredible midseason adjustments.

When I looked at his team before day one I thought I could whip him because of the way it was configured. At that time he was whining about being stuck in a league with pitchers' parks and already making excuses for his performance before he ever had one!

All he did was completely dismantle his team, using the 5% penalty, into one configured to DESTROY my setup, getting Grant and Hunter at the last minute. That was as impressive of an adjustment as I have EVER seen, and is making me reconsider my previous strategy of never relying on the FA market to adjust my teams.

And although me and Riggo and a few others performed a bit under what the numbers said we would, it's a bit hard to say that this league discredits the Joe rating system when you look at the guru's performance. A really great team and a really great manager. I think we're all pretty lucky that Joe doesn't play more...

As Joe always says, the numbers are a guide only- building a great team still takes input from a human in the same way a computer does.

Congratulations to the playoff teams (well earned) and thanks for the Strat lesson guys- I'm looking forward to my revenge.

Well, I'm no guru, but I have managed a [b:59d29b1668][i:59d29b1668]few[/i:59d29b1668][/b:59d29b1668] teams in my day, and this season has indeed been very strange. I ended up underperforming my Pythagorean projection by about 14 games but still had a chance to take the "weak" division (if any division with Riggo, Munich_Man and O.T. could ever be called weak) until last night.

One of these days I'll figure out ATG, but it certainly hasn't happened yet. It remains one of life's great mysteries for me. :(

BTW, if you guys want your revenge on JTJ, just come and play him in 200x. He's a bit easier over there.

On the (Metro Maria's) Munich Man's posting...

(Editor's Note... the following opinions are being expressed by a general
manager currently on a 100-loss pace - take at (below) face value.)

In addition to costly errors (68 unearned runs in a pitcher's park and
division is a huge diasadvantage... I notice two other areas which could
have detracted from your performance...

1.) you've faced 64% righty pitchers vs. 36% lefties... yet your offense is
set up to favor the less-faced lefty-pitchers... your offense is primarily
neutral (Ruel, Kelly, Lajoie) to lefty-balanced (Honus, Sewell,
Birmingham, Parker)... which is somewhat wasted when the lefty
advantage only comes up about a 3rd of the time.

2.) you invested 18.2M of your 80M salary in the notably overpriced
middle infield area... Lajoie and Wagner gave you decent performance
(combined .320 average, solid defense)... but in my opinion, too much
salary spent on just a combined 150 runs and 104 RBI's... a couple
better valued infielders would allow salary use in high impact areas.

Anyway, a lot of tough luck is present too, because on paper, I think your
team is better than their 90 loss performance.

Now, if I could only FORGOT ABOUT my team in this league...

I can firmly say, while I will not avoid leagues because of managers, I would certainly avoid being the 4th place pinata in a division featuring the managers and teams currently in the East.

I was whupped. :(

Ahhh, no need to "duck" Petro, he's a cakewalk, at least in most of the leagues we've been in together. :P :P
