I think you have a BIG problem. You have good OBP, great team speed, good defense, but the total lack of any power makes it unlikely you will get value from these guys and score enough runs to win. You will be lucky to hit 50 HRs for the year, Speaker will hit a lot of 2Bs and G-man, Rice and Chapman will hit a few. Cleon is the only player with more than a 1% chance of a HR on his card, and that is just against LHs.

You need some SLG IMHO. At least two of Rice, Chance and Steiny need to go.

Your team (percentages):

OBP vs RH 0.449
SLG vs RH 0.410
OPS vs RH 0.860
HR Rate vs RH 0.4
BPHR vs RH 3
OBP vs LH 0.461
SLG vs LH 0.435
OPS vs LH 0.896
HR Rate vs LH 0.9
BPHR vs LH 10

I couldn't disagree more. You don't need hr's to win in Griffith. 50 hrs. would be just fine there. You need speed, OBP, pitching, defense and guys that get a lot of hits. And that you have.

I would probably bat Cleon 2nd and Rice 6th but otherwise you're OK.

NEVER, EVER LET CHANCE GO IN GRIFFITH. The guys SSCHU is suggesting you get rid of are the IDEAL guys for Griffith at their positions. SSCHU has good input in bomber parks but not here. IMHO you could not possibly have gotten worse advice.

Don't know about your pitching but your team is tailor made for Griffith, at least the way I play there. Good, no great, job!!

Just curious, are you two in the same league?

I accept this input and stand corrected. Agree, Chance should stay. My reasoning, which may not be valid, but is likley so, is that good options at SS or 2B are probably not available, hence Chapman and G-man are the best choices at this point. Cleon and Speaker clearly stay, there are but a few options left.

It is also difficult to measure the team without knowing the pitching staff, but given the relatively low $$ spent on hitters, he proabably has some good SPs.

BTW, I have played a few smallball teams, actually recently won a ring with one. While not in OT's, Petro's, GK's or others (no insult to those not mentioned) league, I have an appreciation for the approach. Being a causal observer of OT, I notice that he has plenty of SLG on his teams, Joe D seems to be a consistent pick for him in CF. So I stand by my opinion that this team lacks SLG and will struggle as a result. This is not inconsistent with my experience and the numbers provided bear this out from the cards.

But as always, there is more than one way to win in this game and it would not be the first time I was incorrect! :)

Here is a team that I had in mind when I made the 50 hr. comment.

That said my current thinking is to have 1 solid slugger and the rest not sluggers. I like Mantle for this role. But Mays will do. Here's an example. It is a kind of hybrid as Ellis Valentine is a slugger against lefties but a small ball player against righties. I had him just to protect Mantle from seeing too many lefties. The other team has no real power to speak of but did hit 90+ hrs, mostly by accident, not design.

OT is very fond of DiMaggio.

The first team is pretty close, here are the numbers:

OBP vs RH 0.409
SLG vs RH 0.417
OPS vs RH 0.826
HR Rate vs RH 0.8
BPHR vs RH 10
OBP vs LH 0.389
SLG vs LH 0.418
OPS vs LH 0.806
HR Rate vs LH 1.3
BPHR vs LH 11

Slightly higher HR rate. This teams defense is a good deal better, Smith over Chapman, Fox over G-man, Gardner over Steiny and Furillo over Rice from a defensive standpoint.

The second team's numbers:

OBP vs RH 0.442
SLG vs RH 0.431
OPS vs RH 0.873
HR Rate vs RH 2.5
BPHR vs RH 12
OBP vs LH 0.394
SLG vs LH 0.420
OPS vs LH 0.814
HR Rate vs LH 1.9
BPHR vs LH 17

Clearly a much higher HR rate and SLG %.

The last team's numbers:

OBP vs RH 0.436
SLG vs RH 0.406
OPS vs RH 0.841
HR Rate vs RH 0.9
BPHR vs RH 12
OBP vs LH 0.441
SLG vs LH 0.403
OPS vs LH 0.845
HR Rate vs LH 0.8
BPHR vs LH 10

A bit lower SLG, but slightly higher HR rate, 94 team HRs seems high, but is usually away park dependent. Cochrane, Scott, Whit, Trammell and Buford all have the ability to hit double figures in HRs, which they did. Schalk, G-Man, Chapman and Steiny probably do not.

Perhaps jma500 would post his team now and at the end of the season and we can learn something, it would be interesting.

Lastly, I run a lot of numbers, and almost always when one of my teams does well or poorly I can look back and see why this happens. Teams over or under perform, but this tends to even out over a season. My teams seem to do especially poorly when I ignore the numbers .... :)

Best of luck, sschu

I've had recent smallball success with the theory that you have one lefty and one righty slugger and the rest smallballers.

With that said, I like a lot of what you've got going on with this team. I don't like your batting order (assuming that was how you were going to bat them).

Chapman or Speaker should bat 2nd (low DP's and great speed) and Cleon should bat 3rd against LHP's. Also, Chance should leadoff. And find at least one big bat to bat 4th both ways.

Agree that a team link would be very helpful.

Sschu,

Am I correct in thinking you have got the OBP,SLG etc numbers that you post by getting the OB chances on the card, adding them up and then dividing that number by 864 (108 chances *8)? I hope I am right as I find these numbers useful to see what level teams are on and where they need strengthening.

Also, how do you work out the HR rate? Is it add them all up and divide by the number of players, i.e 8?
