Winter Meetings

Postby ROBERTMAVIN » Wed Nov 22, 2006 7:40 am

Just to get ready for the winter meetings.. I think they are in Hawaii again this year...

Please list rules etc that you woudl like to have discussed.

1) Fire Sale Rule - I would like to suggest a self imposed trade deadline so that no trades can be made after 100 games. Firesale trades might help one team in the future but such trades can also ruin an entire league..

Sorry, Bob...

Just made a trade last night...not a fire sale deal since Edmonds was hitting .195, Tejada had an OPS of .669, and I wasn't using Glavine much. I retooled in CF for next year and got a good infielder and pitcher in return...

Trade Details

Date of trade: Tue, 11/21, 11:12:55pm EST

EL Paso Border Patrolers traded:
Matthews Jr., Gary ($1,990,000)
Betancourt, Yuniesky ($2,420,000)
Bedard, Erik ($2,270,000)

to Big City Brew Crew Too for:
Edmonds, Jim ($8,620,000)
Tejada, Miguel ($6,500,000)
Glavine, Tom ($3,450,000)

Jack... no problem.. I certainly understand the trade... and I saw how BADLY your 'stars" were doing.. way overpaid for terrible stats...

the trade just triggered a thought that I had wanted to bring up ... your trade is completely within the existing rules...

hmmmm.....

interesting bob, on the surface to me this af and jack deal while complying with the current rules, seems to me to be the type of deal that rule would seek to prevent.

I'll have to think about it.

As will I.

I'm not in the habit of criticizing deals made by managers I have a good history with, as I do with this group. But I can understand how a deal of this lopsided magnitude would bring screams and howls of protest in any other league I've been in. The fact that we are in a multiple-season league does temper my concerns, but we are still looking at roughly a $12 million disparity in salaries. AF's team leads in the wildcard chase, and is only 2 games out of the division lead. The additions of Edmonds and Tejada, and to a lesser extent Glavine (irregardless of their previous stats with Jack's team), is a major blow to both hawk and the rest of the wildcard chasers. As such, I think that it comes awfully close to the "fire-sale" type of deal Bob was referring to.

Just my thoughts - given my current won-loss record it won't impact me at all.

Sorry to hear of everyone's concerns but, to me, this deal is actually even or better for me this year as well as next year.

Salaries aside, here are the stats of the players I traded:

Edmonds - .197/.344/.375 with 15 HRs and 50 RBI in 107 Games
Tejada - .254/.284/.385 with 9 HRs and 50 RBI in 132 Games
Glavine - 1-6 with a 5.18 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 15 Starts

I didn't see this as a firesale so much as a change of pace this year and a new CF next year who had a better year than Edmonds and might have more good years in the future. I just wasn't getting much out of these three players and I'm willing to use Griffey in CF and get Matthews and Pena in the lineup some against lefties. It's always nice to have Tejada, of course, but he doesn't hit as much as he did in some prior years.

Having said all of that, if this is not viewed as a fair deal, I'm willing to undo it. Didn't mean to cause controversy or offend.

Let me know what you all think.

Jack

I am the guy this mostly offended, since I am second in the WC. At first I thought it looked dubious, but on second thought (knowing the better guys moved OUT of my division), I don't think it is that bad. Tejada and Edmonds seem like a lot for Gary Matthews, but Gary is much younger. With all of you guys doing the "getting younger" thing, this doesn't look horrible.
