The SS to win with....

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

That's true, didn't mean to imply that Adam supported Franco or Hojo, I added that because I am in a couple of leagues where managers turned down trade offers for Burleson or Concepcion because they were all set at SS, and they had the likes of Hojo, Mullinks, Brooks, and Franco starting at SS.

I was venting a bit about that, and when Adam mentioned Smalley, I lumped Smalley in the rest of them. This exercise though has shown, I think, that this was unfair and that Smalley does belong with the Concepcions and Larkins as a viable SS for a contender (but not HoJO, sorry, I'll never accept that).

This also came out because Adam and I were trying to trade Whitaker and Randolf respectively and neither of us could because many of the other managers were happy with their current 2B who, well, I'll just leave it at that.

Well I checked mine and was very surprised at the results.

Smalley
Hojo
Fernandez - Only 200 ab's had Franco
Yount - The only time I have had him for the entire season, and only season with 95+ wins. NO championship.

Ozzie is the best. Comfortably pricd. great d and all 5 years have usable OBA. Concepcion is the next best thing, but then why not save 2 mill and hit a bit less than the average Davey.

Now 2b is where the cheapness works too.

My only championship was a 94 win team in a 60 million league where I ended up with Alfredo Griffin at SS, but my 95 + win teams had the following SS.

1) 3 (Larkin, Ripken, Ozzie)
2) 0
3) 1(Smalley!)- had DeJesus that got almost 200 ABs
4) 0

Have another team with Smalley that should win 95 games (84-54 right now), has Schofield getting about 100 ABs at SS. Ozzie was the SS on my best-ever team, 113 wins, but the reason I won 113 was Porter, McGwire, Boggs, and Guidry all had their top card.

And this exercise just reminds me how terrible I've been in the playoffs. 13 playoffs, 4-9 in semis, 1-3 in finals...sniff sniff

Honestly, I'm not so sure what any of this means. With the $80 million cap, you have to get "value" players at some positions. Some of us cheap out in the BP, some of us cheap out at CA, etc. So, I would imagine you could be successful going cheap at SS/2B too.

Wow, bjs,
Interesting that you've had two 95+ win teams with Mulliniks at SS. given the defense, I would not have thought of him, but you ARE getting a lot of bang for your buck...
