Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

Yeah, this is interesting theme. Wonder if it will be as much fun as that crazy '69 auto league we're in. So many mixed nuts in one place Planter's should have a franchise (with Mr. Peanut as the manager, of course  ). That's what happens when you put three Missouri boys in the same batch.

I was just re-reading through the rules again and the rule about players who played all 5 card years with the same team bugs me a little. The part about a 5 year player can never be dropped once on your team seems like a penalty to me. I think it should be a bonus to the team that player played all those years for and not a penalty. The bonus for that team would be that no other team would ever be able to draft him or pick him up in free agency. It would be like that team's own minor leagues if they aren't already on your roster. However you would be hesitant of ever using such a player if you know that you could never cut him if it turns out to be a bad card. So in essence you would never want a 5 year player on your team unless you were pretty certain that they would not suck.

My suggestion is as follows:

Any player who shows up on your team roster screen (meaning any player who had at least one year playing for that team) would be elligible to be drafted or picked up as a free agent at any time. If you want to limit ownership for autodraft purposes to the team he played the most years for that is fine too. NO restrictions as to 5 year players. The team he played all those years for has an advantage for that player as no other team could ever pick him up and use him.

This gives an advantage to teams who retained their players more. Under this scenario you would want teams that had several 5 year players as you wouldn't have to compete for their services. You would still be able to drop and add them without restrictions though.

The way the rules are set up now you almost want to avoid teams that have 5 year players (other than superstars of course).

Anyway, you don't have to like my suggestion or even impliment it. It is just my 2¢ worth of an

I'd agree that a team should not be required to carry a 5-year player on its roster. I don't know how often that would happen, especially since -- if they are 5-year players with high PA's, they were probably regulars and there won't be many roster options within the limitations of only having players who have played with the team. However, I'd agree that they could be treated like minor leaguers and available later if a team wanted to make a change (especially since nobody else could claim them). Doing away with that rule would not have any significant impact on the franchise theme.

As I understand it, one can pick up any undrafted player who shows up on that team's '80s roster after the AD. Before the AD, the player has to have played a plurality of years with the club to be put on the draft list, with 2-2 players going to the first club listed. After that, they're all fair game.

As to an earlier, post, about draft order: I saw nothing in the rules which stated the first round was AL, the second NL (I think that example was being used hypothetically in a post). If I understand correctly, one can choose any available team in the first round -- only has to select a team from the other league in the second. Hence, the serpentine draft, which should assure that no one has two teams which suck. Even between two mediocre teams (at least one of which would be among the top 6 in one of the leagues) -- especially with two FAs from undrafted clubs -- there should be enough talent to field a competitive team. After all, even some of the worst teams had good players at times, and some of them may have had better years after leaving the first team and you could end up with one of those seasons. I agree that one should not be able to trade teams to have both from one league; that would be contrary to the theme of the league.

You're worried about getting a bad year, right?

Postby honestiago1 » Sun Nov 06, 2005 6:33 pm

You may have a point. I put this to a brief test. Consider the following: Assume an ATL/CAL combo (and what a not so good combo to get, by the way). Here are my 5y's (players only):

Players:
ATL-Benedict, Hubbard, Royster, Horner, R. Ramirez, D. Murphy
CAL-Joyner, Grich, J. Howell, Schofield, Downing,

Pitchers:
ATL-Mahler, Camp, Garber
CAL-Witt, McCaskill

I can see problems with taking Grich, he's having a bad year, and you have no room for Hubbard. I ALSO see that these teams are going to rely a LOT on the free agent phase, and that managers are going to have to look at those 2y and 3y's closely (don't want to lose them later.

Admittedly this is unscientific, but I think LM's got a point. If no one has a problem with it, I propose the rule should read: "5y's belong to you forever, either on your active roster, or in your minor system." The 5y trade rule would still apply, however.

Not to further confuse the issue, but on trades: Understand that franchise players may be traded, but in the rules it did not specify whether trades are only allowed between teams for which the players. Could a player who never played for St. Louis, for example, be traded to the Cardinals from the team which drafted him? Or is it a requirement that all of the players on your team, other than the FAs drafted from non-drafted teams prior to the AD, will have played for the team?

IMHO the trades should only be for players which played for the clubs involved, in order to maximum the integrity of the theme, but it doesn't really matter all that much to me. I just was to be clear on the rule.

Finalizing the 5y players

Postby honestiago1 » Sun Nov 06, 2005 9:03 pm

The original rule stated that 5y's can only be involved in a trade for other 5y's, and that this could only happen once. I proposed this to add a wild card element to the teams. As it could only happen once, 5y movement would be minimal, and would only include teams filling specific needs.

I think we need to clarify the 5y issue once and for all, so I am going to say that 5y's can NEVER be moved from your team. You don't have to carry them on your active roster (meaning you can move them to the minors, if you want), but they have to stay with your franchise (I have updated the original rules to reflect this). This may cramp some folks' style, but it just makes sense to me, considering what we're trying to do with this theme.

On another note, I will NOT back off on the drafting issue. I want everyone's picks to be clear and safe during autodraft, so rules concerning player ownsership vis-a-vis autodraft phase stay the same. I think we will see a lot of player movement during free agency, when players with additional entries are available for their other "non-owning" teams.

Thanks Honestiago for the rule change on the 5 year players. Now the 5 year players for either of your two teams are assets to your team since you don't have to worry about other teams getting them or being able to drop them from your team if they have a bad card.

Player Spreadsheet available

Postby LMBombers » Mon Nov 07, 2005 10:46 am

For anyone who is interested I have an Excel spreadsheet of all the 80s players by team for the autodraft. These have all the team elligible players by team, meaning players that have 3 or more cards for a team or for 2-2 players they are listed for the earliest listed team only. This is only useful for the autodraft. After the autodraft you can just click on any team at the free agent page to see every player that has at least 1 possible card for a particular team.

If you would like this spreadsheet contact me with your email address and I will send it to you. Maybe having this research in hand will inspire others to fill out this league! :D
