Bullpen advice needed

Bullpen advice needed

Postby JEFFFESPERMAN » Sat Dec 23, 2006 7:31 am

I've played in Coors before, but I have never had a problem with blown saves until now. Does HAL handle your bullpen differently when pitchers bat as opposed to when you are using a DH? I would appreciate any and all advice since my bullpen is the currently the weak link holding this team back.

closer usage = regular
relief usage = normal
Reyes is setup man and closer versus righties
Gonzalez does the same versus the left
Flores is set to avoid righthanders
Davies is set for mop up
Majewski has no restricitions other than to avoid blowouts

I forgot to mention that this league requires a five-man rotation so the starting rotation is Tejeda/Suppan/Loaiza/Morris/Hernandez

The settings look about right to me. Might wanna try relief conservative, at least just to see how it goes. And if you think your other pitchers are worn out, you can remove "avoid blowouts" from Majewski. But I think the bullpen performance isn't really due to your settings, but to none of your pitchers having high closer ratings. You would have been better off finding a relatively cheap guy with low ballpark HR and a good closer rating to pitch your 9th innings in close ones, while Reyes/Gonzalez pitch all the other important innings besides that. On a larger level, I'd say your team's big issue isn't pitching -- you're gonna have at least a couple of 4.50-5.00 ERAs in Coors, that's just how it goes -- rather, it's your .336 team OBA, which is not gonna cut it in Coors.

I appreciate the consult DeanTSC. I took your advice and changed my relief setting to conservative and proceeded to sweep my next series at Coors with my starters going 7.1/8.1/8.0 and Reyes and Gonzalez both picking up a save.
