A ruthless bit of self-promotion...

Postby PJ Axelsson » Thu Nov 10, 2005 6:48 pm

It seems like every few months, the same topic comes up, where everyone pounds their chest, posts their stats, and explains why they are one of the best. From my experience, many of the best managers don't bother posting here and don't play enough to rack up gaudy stats.

I'll pass on the 10 league challenge to see who's the best, not my style. My number of fourth place finishes ought to disqualify me anyway.

Have fun! :)

I'll pass on the 10 team challenge as well. My comment here was not chest-pounding, but rather to show why I don't have enough experience yet to run with the big dogs. My 2 4th place finishes should permanently disqualify me!

I was just posting to demonstrate the difference I see in TSN leagues VS Vet leagues.

While I love a challenge I certainly have no desire to commit myself to 10 more leagues. We already have a Banrstormers Tour & Bobby's MOTY leagues and the competition doesn't get any tougher than thsoe two leagues. If someone wants to "prove" they are a quality manager both of those tournamnets/leagues did not limit the number of competitors & you WILL face the best TSN managers there are. One thread that puts 12 players together is very limiting & while I'm sure it would provide great competition it wouldn't really prove anything to me.

Lastly, while I am as competitive as the next person the main reason I still play the TSN game is the community. Getting to know people like I have met in Vegas is far more important than winning any league. By the way if you really want to prove you are a great manager, try Netplay where you actually get to manage your team. The truly great managers play Netplay :P :D

Completely agree with you, Petrosian, as to the difficulty of winning titles. If you have 6 experienced managers and 6 rookies, the 6 experienced managers are going to have good winning percentages, but you're still gonna have to go up against quality teams in the playoffs. Seems to me that playing in a lot of TSN games should help your %, help your playoff appearances (to some extent)... and that's about it.

We're already starting up league #8 of Bobbys 10 league tourney... very, very high level of competition. But I'm always ready for another such tourney once this winds down (or sooner!)

Don't think I've ever played in an ATG league with you, Petrosian, but we're matched up in a high quality '69 league.

Ooops, I just noticed that my previous posts have not been very argumentative. I want to make up for that by pointing out that the rest of you are a bunch of pathetic losers, not fit to scrape the dirt out of Delancey's spikes after he slides into home with the winning run in yet another stunning Roadkill victory.

Thanks.

well my 2 cents worth. i have played in 8 completed leagues. ands 4 still active. i have made 6 finals and have 1 title. of the 12, 3 are tsn leagues and 8 set up leagues with many of the managers listed. even the tsn leagues have had a 2/3 high manager rating. my % is pretty good. i think i hold my own against the good managers. but to be honest its the good managers that have taught me well and have helped me with expert advice. that what i love about this game. if you wanna learn and take the time the good managers help the newbies like myself. so as far as chest pounding goes i think you should all pound your chests for the promotion of this great friend making game.

couple of things... as usual I will defend the auto leagues. They are much tougher then some seem to give them credit for. Also petro those are gaudy numbers and you are to be congratulated for building good teams on such a regular basis, not an easy feat by any means...but I think the "regualrs" are quite aware of your success. As for number of teams being run at once...I did 30+ teams at the same time and my winning % didn't change really. If you take the time to do the best to build them to start with they are self sustaining. All running 40 teams means is that you have more money to thorw around then other players here do.

However, deriding or belittling other players sure takes away from respect. Thats why guys like Michael, Bobby, Charlie and many many others still stand head and shoulders above regardless of records, championships etc. You won't find the nevster deriding someone else for having a lower winning % then his...in fact Michael is supportive and helpful...rather then making fun he steps up and tries to improve the other guys choices. Thats also why if someone surpasses nev in titles or whatever ...in my book he's still the KING of ATG. The nevster will also play in any park anytime and more often then not win. He doesn't confine himself to 1 or even 2 or 3 styles or types.

There are lots of fine managers here that build good teams, build winners. Lots of helpful people also, and good people. The bottom line is ...winning % alone don't make you a "winner"....that takes a bit more.

nicely said rob. if players like yourself had'nt taken the time with me when i first started to play i probably would still be playing espn and yahoo. thats what i meant by the good players helping new comers makes even the auto leagues a battle. if the newcomer wants to listen and learn. i have nev shaking his head with my draft picks. haha. he cant figure out who i might select next. many ways to build a winner.
