Hey, everybody knows that baseball is 95% half mental.

[quote:b26e328905="bigmahon"]Well, lost in the semis in 5 games. HAL went a bit mental and pulled Zito in the midst of a 2 hit shutout, presumably because Zito had the audacity to issue a walk with one out in the 7th. Should be OK though, 'cause its my stud RP Carrasco to the rescue, right? Wrong. HAL let's Carrasco (set to slow hook) pitch 2/3 of an inning, then turns it over to my cheapie RPs to blow the lead. Madness I tell ya, madness. [/quote:b26e328905]

Not that I want to defend Hal, but Carasco is only a C1, not a C6. Therefore, when the ninth inning came, with you leading by one run, the closer rule kicked in, and considering that Carasco had pitched two outs in the 8th, he was already past his C1, and therefore was in the critical zone for being tired. When he allowed the walk to start the 9th, he became fatigued, and Hal usually don't mess with fatigued pitchers (in fact, I don't have the stats with me, but Flores-not-tired vs Kotsay is probably better than Carasco-tired vs Kotsay, and Guardardo-C6 is probably a better card than Carasco-tired-C1.

Bottom-line, it pays to have a C6, sometimes.

Still, great season.

[b:12d7caacd5]luckyman[/b:12d7caacd5], excellent points as always. Thing is, I [b:12d7caacd5]did[/b:12d7caacd5] have a C6 (Guardado), who was rested and ready to go. In fact, Guardado had 14 saves during the regular season coming in in just these types of circumstances. Now you could argue that Flores is a better choice for Kotsay, but Guardado offers more balance for finishing the game.

More important that any of this though is the decision to remove Zito in the midst of a 2 hit shutout. I don't think Zito had reached his POW yet...

Anyway, I'm over it. 8)

yeah, you're right, Zito was still 2 walks/hits away from reaching his POW. But with Carasco warming up in the bullpen, it's hard to not reach for him.

Great season BigM!

You made the fatal mistake of posting this team before you'd won the championship however. A wiley vet like yourself should know better than to jinx himself like that.

Concerning Duke and Benson: It's amazing how many teams have been successful in 2006 while flaunting the once sacred scripture of mixing SP's with *SP's!

Thanks Coffee!

Hey, I'm not superstitious. If I was I would have given this up a long time ago!

I don't really place all that much creedence in the "don't mix *s and non-*s" logic. To me, I just want the best pitchers. So in this case, when I missed out on one of my *s in the AD and got Duke, I just kept him, mainly because he was so much better than anyone else available on the wire. And since I didn't want to drop Smoltz and Zito, that meant a mixture.
