Yount demolishing RBI record

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

Thanks Chief.
Outta LF, I dont think I really have any 'secrets'. I set up a strategy for a my team before the season starts and try to stay with the plan the whole season. I will make little adujustments as the season goes on. I do put some time in to examining the teams in my divsion and the possible playoff matchups. I have been fortunate to be able to tweak my team from time to time to take advantage of a 'match up' with a team I expect to have to face in the playoffs. One of the things I like most about the 80's game is that the approach to biulding a team can be different each season depending on my park, the parks in my divsion and, of course, the cards you are dealt.

That's exactly what I do too. :D You really are on a roll with your teams though.

Also, I know which Luis Aguayo card you have based on those stats. :D Gotta love his '85 card.

Thanks, Panzer Ace...

I think I'm mostly trying to do the same things (though maybe not at the same level of success). :D

One thing I haven't really thought of, though, is tweaking my team with an eye to likely playoff matchups. That does sound interesting. Would this mean something like adding another lefty hitter if the opponent has all starting RHP, or adding a lefty to the staff if the opponent doesn't hit lefties well? I'm guessing trades might work here?--you could give up equal value to get the better matchup???

Yes. Any adjustments to take advantage of a match up can help. I have traded a RH SP for a LH SP when the match up was favorable. I have also used the FA list to add a guy like Wockenfuss to play against a Kingdome team that started 5 LH SP and had a LH closer. Not sure I would have won that 5 game semi without him.

If I am in playoff contention as the season draws to end (when you start playing only within your division), I really try to make sure my team matches up well versus my opponents pitching and I also look to see if my entire division hits well against left hand pitchers or right handed pitchers and trade accordingly. Sometimes I will give up a pretty good right handed pitcher to get a left hander of lesser quality if the teams in my division do not hit left handed pitching. I like to look beyond those last 36 games to the playoffs and fine tune for that as well, but who has enough confidence to do that besides someone like Panzer?

Yount update

Postby Panzer ace » Fri Nov 18, 2005 2:03 pm

199 and counting
Tonight is the last night. Yount looking for 200. The runs scored record looks safe. "Blue Eyes" has cooled of late. They need 33 runs tonight to get the record. The amazing thing is that this team may not make the playoffs anymore. A 7-14 week#7 and 3-9 this week down the stretch looks to have doomed the team. They are now 2 games out of the wildcard. They must get a sweep tonight (against my team) or win 2 of 3 and hope a couple other wildcard teams get swept. In any case, Yount is finishing a remarkable season. (I know YF, no surprise to you!)

Mike Young has 37 HRs in 427 ABs! When did you squeeze him into the lineup?

I have a pretty deep team. I have been able to adjust my line up based on my opponent. I get him some playing time when I can.

Yount/runs record update

Postby baracus68 » Sat Nov 19, 2005 10:24 am

Yount stopped at 199 RBI, probably wanting to save a dozen or so for his team's first round playoff against my squad. Blue Eyes didn't quite make it to the runs scored record, but they did well enough to tie for third all-time, and check out how they squeaked into the playoffs--game 162, needing a win, down three in the bottom of the ninth:

Molitor must have been sick of all the attention given to Yount! Pinch-hit 3-run walkoff homerun in the bottom of the ninth. Wow.

Didn't know that Brad Lidge was in the 80s game!
