Newbie asks a couple of questions

Hello,
I am new. A refugee from ESPN classic that is disbanding. I was wondering if Eddie Ciccote or Ed Reulbach have good cards over here. They pretty much stink over there and was thinking about making them the aces on my squad over here. Any advice or perhaps a ringer mention or two would be greatly aprreciated.

Ask away, everyone here is more than willing to help out. Unfortunately, the new message boards (these) do not have the search function the old ones had. there is a wealth of information from lots of people about everything from strategy, individual players, playing styles, etc. but it will be much more difficult to find. After playing fantasy sports online for nearly 15 years at a number of different places, this is by far the best community of people you will ever have the pleasure of playing with. Welcome!

As for your specific question, both cicotte and Reulbach have great cards. Cicotte is a true ace and can anchor a staff for sure. The problem with Reulbach is he is not a * rated pitcher, which means he can only start every 5th day. His card rocks, though. Both are top of the line, but you will have to ask yourself if you want to pay so much for a pitcher who can only start every 5th day.

How many starting pitchers should I go with?
Have added ciccote,Carlton and Gullickson (he seemed to win 15 games a year each and every year). How many more do I need?
Also, defense was huge over at classic...how important is it here? can you get by with mediocre defense?

Up the middle defense is important. Most people use a 4 man rotation and have a cheap 5th starter just to meet the roster requirements though 5 man rotations have gained in popularity in ATG II.

I never tries espn classic so I won't be able to compare the two but bkoron I believe played espn and would be able to compare better.

Deadball pitching is what I try to use. Some cheap pitchers are popular in various parks though also.

Surfing through the Records Book section of the site for team accomplishments may give you some ideas.
Matching your team to your park is HUGE.
Strongly suggest after your team is drafted that you come back to the boards & show us a link; the vets here can provide solid advice.

When I played classic I could never let go and try/use players that I liked. I always used ringers. For $25 I think I may try Larry Herndon as a RH DH. My dad was a huge Tigers fan and we'd go see em play the Brewers when in Milwaukee. Herndon was my favorite player in those days. He was terrible in Classic. I imagine OI'll end up in last but I hope it is fun.

If your interest lies in a particular team there are sometimes theme leagues set up that limit you to a team plus a few scrubs or drafting two teams etc. Also note there is a 1969 version in addition to the ATG.

I hope that you had the "good sense" to be a Brewers fan. :D
