With a fast team, I almost always set running (Or basestealing) ON normal. Then I set individuals on "Steal More" if they are a "B" or better. And "Don't Steal" If they are a D or E. If they are a C - I usually do not check anything. In the event that the odds are with you - Hopefully HAL will attempt the steal. If I have a slow team with nobody faster than a B, then I set Strategy on "Conservative". Even with 5 or more basestealers with a B or better, I NEVER set on "Aggressive" because what I have found is that HAL will attempt to steal with D's and occasionally even E's if the pitcher and/or Catcher has a combined + rating. I don't like to run myself out of possible big innings.
With baserunning, I do the same. The "Normal" setting seems to work best - leaving it up to HAL to run on an OF of mixed arms. If a runner is a 1-14 or better and the OF has a + arm - I would hope that Hal would take the extra base - especially on plays to home. But conversely, if there is an Ichiro type arm in the OF, I wouls prefer that even my 1-17 WILL NOT attempt to take the extra base.
I have found that if you set running on "Aggressive" - HAL will read that as a green light to run on almost everyone and I think it has more rally killing effects. With a slow team - mostly under 1-13, I find it is better to set on conservative. But the Normal setting in strategy and the controls on individual player cards seems to give you the most advantages if 1. Your speed is mixed 2. Catchers arms plus Pitcher'[s hold ratios are mixed in a 3 game series, or if OF's arm's are mixed - which is usually the case.
The only time I would use aggressive - is when I have a very fast team, all the Pitcher's have a + hod ratio as well as the C AND as far as running - all the OF's were +. But it is very rare.
