New feature needs clarification

New feature needs clarification

Postby Free Radicals » Sat Mar 10, 2007 12:38 pm

I know it's a subtle change but on the individual hitters cards "Don't Steal " is now " Don't Steal if Held " . I'm not sure I'm liking this designation. Does this mean an D or E will try to steal if not held ? What will it truly mean ? I'd like to hear from Bernie on this one .

That's what it always has said in the PC game, so I would think it is not a change, but rather a more accurate description of the feature.

In ATG , 2006 and the 70's games it only says "Don't Steal"

Now it says "Don't Steal if Held" in 2007 so it is a new thing . I do not want slow guys running because they are not being held . Hell , I don't want slow guys running at all .

FRad: Dean is referring to the PC game, not any prior TSN product. I think he's right and the feature isn't new, just more well-defined.

My understanding is that that's the way the engine has always worked i.e. "Do not steal if held"

Not a new feature, just better defined.

I defy you...

This is a big complaint for such a minor issue.

On top of what was said above by Dean, I defy you to show me an instance where a D or an E was caught stealing with "Do Not Steal" (if held), was checked.

If the catcher/pitcher combo amounted to a +5 on a D runner, and his first number is like 10 or something, do I want him stealing with a singles hitter at the plate in a tie game late? Probly I do.

I believe the new definition was brought in because of the complaints of coaches having Nick Johnson who kept cumulating his 6/7 caught stealing per season in 2006 even though he was checked "don't steal".

Hey guys, sorry for chiming in late on this.

Dean is correct: this is a clarification and not a change. This checkbox has always been "Don't Steal if Held" in the PC CD-ROM game; I don't know how it lost the distinction "if Held" in its transition to previous online games, but it did, by mistake. The description in all other games [i:c8243e6aa4]should[/i:c8243e6aa4] be changed to "if Held", but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

So, as far as I understand it, the option will prevent steal attempts only if the runner is held on base, leaving open the opportunity for attempts if the chance for success is good. However, I do see the point where some of those attempts also come with a relatively high chance of disaster, which is another area where the fact that the PC CD-ROM game was initially designed to [i:c8243e6aa4]simulate[/i:c8243e6aa4] real-life results (e.g. caught-stealing occurences) and not be a fiercely [i:c8243e6aa4]competitive[/i:c8243e6aa4] manager rears its head.

I do hope to do an audit of the player options in the near future and improve their usefulness, so a flat out "Don't Steal" may eventually be offered.

Bernie thx for the clarrification.

In the SOM game u can set the CM to steal based on certain %s.
As an example:
If he has a 65% chance of success then u try and steal. He still may not try based on the pitcher doing a good job holding him on. But he won't try at all if his chance is less than 65%.
The success rate is determined by a combination of his speed, the catchers arm and the pitchers ability to hold him on and if he is held on at all.
In our game, I presume the decision to go is a % which relates to wether u set the stealing to Aggressive, normal, conservative etc. (not sure why this is a secret)

You can also set what runner you chose to hold, if he is a 50% runner, u may not hold him on, where if he is a 70% u may want to.
In our game we don't have that option, so it is predetermined at some %.

I would think that the game is set up, so if the box is checked the runner won't go unless the pitcher has a +5 hold and the catcher can't throw past the mound and he is a runner who is fast enough to be over the secret %.

Just a guess, but I really don't think it matters - check the box and Killebrew will not steal but your C's or Bs may depending on the conditions.

I was puzzled by this since some player cards say "Don't steal if held" and others say "don't steal" only. Endy Chavez and Willy Taveras cards say "don't steal". Orlando Hudson and Markakis cards say "Don't steal fi held"...
