Sweat Sox Opening Day 25 Man Roster

Postby ROBERTMAVIN » Wed Mar 21, 2007 9:04 pm

Draft had a bit of a forward look to it as future value seemed to get as much or more consideration than 2007 value. My team reflects that too but I think my minor leagus are a bit weaker in 2007 than a number of others...

My SP's are middle of the road but bearable..
my bullpen should not cause me too many problems.
lots of platoons- C/LF/RF
will be a fun team.. but I think that I should get ready to say hello to my good friends in B (Central) Division next season.. :D

I do have a roster spot open .. with 4 contenders...

Ok I understand the George reference, but what about Clark Griffith? I looked on Wiki and he is a guy who pitched/managed and owned in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Was he cheap?

Calvin Griffith.. if memory serves was the last family owner of the Minnesota Twins... the Griffith family did not have any other business income other than the Twins.. and they used to have the lowest payrolls in baseball.. incredibly loyal players.. (and fans) ... who played for lower salaries than they could have gotten elsewhere but the Twins had to make a profit for the Griffith family...

sorry I got his dad, who owned the team originally, name in there..

One of Griffith's most trusted friends and respected scouts was Joe Engel, who he placed in charge of the Chattanooga Lookouts at Engel Stadium. Engel was the first to scout Cronin for the club and said, "I knew I was watching a great player. I bought Cronin at a time he was hitting .221. When I told Clark Griffith what I had done, he screamed, "You paid $7,500 for that bum? Well, you didn't buy him for me. You bought him for yourself. He's not my ballplayer - he's yours. You keep him and don't either you or Cronin show up at the ballpark." Cronin became the best player on the World Series winning Senators club in the early 1930s and even married Griffith's niece.

When Griffith died, ownership of the club passed into the hands of his adopted son, Calvin Griffith, who led the charge to have the club moved to Minnesota and become the Twins.

I would have thought a Tampa Bay reference would have been more appropriate, but this is what I found

[quote:df090e47a0]
Like his penny-pinching uncle, Calvin Griffith was a notoriously frugal person, which often got in the way of winning pennants. He brought along several young stars, including Tony Oliva and Harmon Killebrew, but he rarely put up the money to bring on other players to complement their talents. At first, this seemed to be just a minor setback - the Twins even won the American League pennant in 1965, and Calvin was named the AL's Executive of the Year. But his stubbornness and tightness with the pursestrings became even more problematic during the reserve clause and free agency rulings of the late 60s and early 70s. [/quote:df090e47a0]

TALK ABOUT YOUR HOUSE CLEANING!

Postby LANCEBOUSLEY » Wed Mar 21, 2007 9:41 pm

26 Total Players on either of my 2006 final rosters.

9-10 players to be on the opening day roster for 2007 depending on a couple of decisions.

4 players move up from the taxi squad.

11-12 players new to the roster. 2 via trade 9-10 via draft!

Is this any way to win a pennant?

Maybe you should just call me MR Beane!!!!

Blue, the pressure is all on you guy !

you have your last pick to still make on the draft site.. and you can close out the East and so that we can start loading the Central.

ideally the draft would run on Saturday night.. that will give us a week to tweak and fine tune.. and who knows, maybe you guys are not traded out yet !
;)

PS.. thanks Jack for the info on draft timing
