Re: Angels: A SOLID Second-Round Pick!!

Postby pedakrla » Wed Apr 25, 2007 9:14 am

[quote:1f833f5bfe="Risden"]As far as the protected players list, here is what I propose: Each team will need to list the 15-20 players that they want to protect from Team 1 and the 5 (NO MORE THAN 5) players from Team 2 that they want to protect. POST THOSE PLAYERS HERE (for all to see) and I will volunteer my services to send either an Excel-based sheet of the available players for drafting in Rounds 3 and Round 4 OR I'll post them here (although the list would be extremely lengthy!).

Thoughts? Suggestions?[/quote:1f833f5bfe]

Thanks for volunteering, Risden. What do you think about everyone PM'ing you their list of protected players, and then you distribute them all at once? Reason being, guys who are late in posting their protected players could have an advantage by seeing who other guys have left unprotected. That will give the late-posters an idea of which players might be available as free agents, which is valuable information in deciding who to protect yourself.

Probably not a real big deal. I can live with either way.

PS--Excel spreadsheet sounds good to me. That way we can sort it, and it will be easier to work with.

drafting and the cap

Postby franky35 » Wed Apr 25, 2007 9:17 am

Hold on here, I'm not so sure about drafting under the cap. I think that rules on drafting are clear, except that it isn't clear whether you must draft within the 100 mil cap. I asked about that earlier and the responses seem to imply that we don't need to draft under the cap. Here are my posts:

1)
Do we need to protect 25 players that will pass through the autodraft?

If so, then we need to calculate whether we are in under the 100 mil cap AND make sure that we have 10 pitchers and 15 hitters.

Bob didn't reply directly to question (1), but InfoCzar replied:
Youre right...this all gets confusing re: keeping so many guys under the $100M cap.

And I prefer to decide which 15-20 I keep off my 1st team from stats at BaseballReference.com and join TSN lg, pay $, AFTER we're completely done with draft so I can focus on my 2nd team, park and free agents, not trying to see how many guys I can get & stay below $100M ... it's confusing.

The following question and reply made it seem like we don't need to draft under the 100 mil cap
2)
Bob,

Just to clarify, do we need to draft a team that can autodraft? Or can we pick up 0.5 mil free agents to autodraft and keep rights over protected players that aren't on our roster?

Your team that will be autodrafted will be after you have done the following:
1) From 1st Franchise drafted you protect 15-20 players
2) From 2nd Franchise drafted you have protected 5 players giving you 20 to 25 players.

3) You then complete your 25 man roster by chosing 0 to 3 FA's followed by the picking of 0 to 2 FA's. The number of FA's picked will depend on how many protected players you've selected.

Once you've completed your protected list and the draft as begun all non-protected players are eligible to be drafted as a FA and that FA can be drafted by their original team.

Once you've protected 20-25 players they're no longer your property.

Hmmmmmm

Since we get to keep any fa's that get through rounds 3 and 4 unclaimed, what would the point be to having those rounds if there were only a bunch of 50 centers unprotected?

When the league started, all players not on someones original 25 man tsn roster would be free agents. So you would have to put together a team that satisfied the tsn game engine and was under $100mill.

Now that we changed the rules to a 'farm system' approach, a team could protect all of their high priced players through rounds 3 and 4 (at whatever price) and then 'keep' them on the farm, blocking others from picking them up.

This was discussed at several points in this thread and I don't think it is what was intended.

Bob, it's your league. What did you have in mind?

An Example from my team

Postby KnightErrant » Wed Apr 25, 2007 10:30 am

I am planning on leaving Gary Gentry available for rounds 3 & 4 because I won't need him as a starter and I want to preserve the $6 million he would cost to pick up position players the Mets/Dodgers are weak at. So, if one of the other teams want Gentry he can draft him and I lose rights to him.

My understanding is, simply,
1) I protect [b:408636ba9f]15-20[/b:408636ba9f] players from the Mets and [b:408636ba9f]EXACTLY 5[/b:408636ba9f] (no more/no less) from the Dodgers
2) if I don't protect a player he is available to everyone for drafting in rounds 3 & 4 [i:408636ba9f](so, if I don't include Bill Singer among my 5 protected Dodgers, someone else is sure to grab him)[/i:408636ba9f]
3) the 25 players we protect and draft make up the Draft List for the game and, hence, [b:408636ba9f]must be[/b:408636ba9f] 10 pitchers and 15 position players and [b:408636ba9f]cannot exceed[/b:408636ba9f] $100,000,000.

Anyhow, that is my understanding.

P.S. I'm not giving away any secret plans writing about Gentry. Anyone looking at my two teams would realize that Gentry is a waste of money. And, I'm going to protect Singer, so don't hold out hope. :P

I think KnightErrant is correct. You MUST draft the guys you are protecting; therefore, they (along with your FA pickups) have to total less than $100M.

And if you think about it, why would you have an option of protecting "10-15" from team 1, unless this was the case? If we didn't have to worry about the effect on the $100M cap, then we'd all just protect 15, since their would be no repercussions.

CAP

Postby rschwartz51 » Wed Apr 25, 2007 11:20 am

My intention was to have managers pick up to 5 Free Agents keeping within the leagues cap. I'm pretty sure I recommended buying a team and putting the 20 to 25 protected players on the teams roster used for auto drafting and then inputting the 0 to 5 Free Agents on the roster. You can drop players after the draft and replace with players from your 2 Franchises that weren't selected. Therefore, you would have to keep under $100M.
