Any Experience with Rollie Fingers?

I'm thinking about trying him at Yankee 56, need a RH RP, but lots of S and platoons in the division, and several LHs, like Cobb hoping to slow down a bit. Orosco will be my closer, not much else to pick from.

BTW, saw Rollie live at County Stadium in 1982 when he hurt his arm, the Brew Crew were on a roll when he got hurt. I remember at the time, though my beer fogged brain, that there goes the pennant ... fun season for sure.

Yeah sschu I drafted him one season intending to use him as my closer. Well, HAL didn't like using him there despite every relief setting possible (including no settings). He regularly got pulled in save situations and subsequently only appeared in about 40 games all year. I found out that he has no closer rating (he's an N@) & HAL will actually avoid using him in most close situations.

IMO he's way too expensive to be used only occasionally. Dave Smith is a similar pitcher and has a closer rating (6@). HAL would use him more.

May be aberation because I agree about the settings but have him and Konstanty on a team srt-up L and R with Deacon Phillipe set as my closer but Deacon is 1 of my starters Konstanty getting more innings but Fingers has 17 saves 63 games in

Each reliever is given a second rating next to his Relief Endurance rating which we will refer to as his "Closer Endurance". For example, a pitcher who is rated "relief (2/3) has a Relief Endurance of 2 and a Closer Endurance of 3. The Closer Endurance rating is a measure of how many outs a pitcher can maintain his effectiveness in "Closer situations". The rating ranges between 0 and 6, or "N" which means he is not used as a closer.

As mentioned above, Dave Smith is similarly priced and has a closer rating of /6@. That's 6 outs, so he could come in in the 8th and he shouldn't be pulled. He should get a few 1+ inning closes. I'd have him listed as set up vs. LH and closer vs. both.

He wouldn't be a bad substitute and IMO you get more for your $ because HAL will use him more.......theoretically.

Fingers has been relatively successful for me – but would agree that it would be nice if he could get more innings. I always use him as a setup man, with or without a designated closer.
