4 Starters vs 5 Starters?

Postby jayne_cobb » Wed May 02, 2007 5:57 pm

Newbie here looking for some friendly advice.

In "real life" there is some logic to having 5 starters. You don't want to have your starters wear out their arms. Any such logic in Strato? I would still keep a 5th maybe even a 6th starter on the bench just in case of injury, however when it comes to your rotation is there any reason to have that 5th starter pitch if he is your worst starter?

Any help would be great.

4 and 5 man rotations are determined by the pitchers * rating. A * allows a pitcher to start on 3 days rest(hey it's Strat). If you have a 4 man rote then you need 4 SP* and 1 that will never see the mound(go with a .50 cheapy). The 5th starter will only see playing time if one of your 4 SP* is injured. This is not rare but your 5th guy may only pitch a dozen or so innings max. If you choose a 5 man rote than you can use 5 SP(no *). If one of these starters is injured then Hal will choose a starter from your staple of RP's. It doesn't often make sense to mix and match SP* and SP. By using a SP* in a 5 man rotaion you waste the value he has in pitching every 4th day. Some have done this with success and I think that if it were ever to be a "good" idea then 07 is the place to start since SP depth is poor.

I like to try to get one * stud who can start every fourth day and then four other non-* starters who fill in around my stud.

This means my * stud starts game one and five of the Semis, which can be a big advantage.

When I have a five-man rotation, I like to have a couple of * starters who can go on short rest during the playoffs. My last 2006 team, for example, played at Jacobs Field and won the league using a starting staff that included Cliff Lee*, Brad Radke*, Matt Clement, Jonathan Papelbon and Pete Walker. Radke, our ace, pitched games #1 and #5 in the semifinals and pitched game #3 in the finals. He was scheduled to pitch game #7, but the finals only went six games.

Partly by luck, partly by plan. 3 of my pitchers are * rated. The fourth is Lirano. All of those 4 pitchers have winning records. My fifth starter is 1-5. So while I won't be able to go with 4 starters completely because of Lirano, if I understand what everyone is saying I should be getting my * rated pitchers to pitch more often?

I guess essentially I am asking is there any downside to having someone pitch on 4 days rest. (injury, overuse, something I don't know about?)

No, there is no such downside.

I always use 4 man rotation...

however , I think that strato should eleminate the SP* , for next years game, as it is not realistic.....and it would make it more challenging building teams
