Bobby Doerr or Jackie Robinson for $60m Polo Grounds team?

Still too much spent on pitching.

In $80M leagues you can go bargain basement with mostly under $1M no BP HR guys and still win with a huge offensive lineup. But in cheaper cap leagues, I've found that it doesn't work as well--especially if most other teams have pitcher's parks.

That said, I'd focus in on a 5-man rotation with guys like Leever, Bagby, Ruether and fill out the end with a couple cheapies. (I see Cvengros is available.) Also, I'd grab Meyer to spot start in road pitcher's parks.

Not thrilled with your lineup. Hodges isn't used in $80M or even $100M leagues, so why use him here? You want bargains. Doerr will do terribly on the road. Trammell might seemingly be your best option at SS, but sometimes he bats like Tony Fernandez. Griffey is very iffy, Doby can't hit lefties and Yeager might look like a good C but look at those errors (especially throwing errors!). Bando and the Oglivie/Alou platoon are fine.

Yount, Yaz, Aaron, Mathews, Simmons look like a good core to build around... they slug and do decently in pitcher's parks. My favorite hitting bargain in ATGII is Buford, who could play LF or 3B for you and leadoff.

In a slugger's park, ideally you want AT LEAST 4-5 guys who routinely hit 30+ HRs. Right now, you've got marginal potential with Hodges, Doby, Oglivie, Bando and maybe Yeager.

I'd go:

Crandall/Hershberger or maybe Sanguillen/Hershberger
Cash
Evers or Hornsby!
Yount
Mathews or Bando
Yaz or Buford
Simmons or Doby/Lemon or Ott
Aaron

Thanks Zippy.

I think I am going to keep my money in pitching. I'm too chicken to go lower than that. I picked up Meyer for spot starts.

I dumped Yeager, Hodges, and Trammell :( :( :( for Sanguillen, Cash, and Yount. :D :D :D

I am curious....who leads off in your line up? Myself I certainly wouldn't keep Doby, Griffey or Doerr. I might look at Evers....Mathews is tempting, at catcher I would probably use Ted Simmons or hershberger to save $$$, or get both. Here is a nice Simmons season...playoffs as well as regular season...

yea he gave up 200 steals .... as you can see it didn't hurt my record much.

I would want a good lead off hitter no matter hwat else you do...solo HR's won't win you many games.

Thanks, Rob, for your input as well.

I'm thinking of going with these lineups:

Lineup vs. LHP
1. Doby, Larry (L) CF
2. Alou, Jesus (R) LF
3. Yount, Robin (R) SS
4. Bando, Sal (R) 3B
5. Sanguillen, Manny (R) C
6. Doerr, Bobby (R) 2B
7. Cash, Norm (L) 1B
8. Griffey Sr., Ken (L) RF
9. Pitcher P

Lineup vs. RHP
1. Griffey Sr., Ken (L) RF
2. Bando, Sal (R) 3B
3. Yount, Robin (R) SS
4. Oglivie, Ben (L) LF
5. Cash, Norm (L) 1B
6. Doby, Larry (L) CF
7. Sanguillen, Manny (R) C
8. Doerr, Bobby (R) 2B
9. Pitcher P

I'm obviously not trying to lead the league in stealing. Griffey, Bando, and Doby have decent base-speed, and I don't know where to bat Alou vs. lefties.

Griffey seems like a decent top-of-the-lineup choice for $2m. Doby has pop, but Doby and Doerr are really on the team for defense as much as their offense. Even though I am in the Polo Grounds, many teams in this $60m league went with Forbes, etc.

Jackie Robinson is available to replace Doerr. His OBP is tempting, but Doerr's glove and 600 PA have my leaning towards Doerr. Hmmm?...

Pick up Jackie to play third and lead off.. Trade Cash and Bando for Frank McCormick to play first. Doby for Gorman Thomas if you have the dough.
Yount for Banks. Plenty of pop with some OBP.

I'm a Doby fan in a HR park, so take that into account when I say:

You can't lead off Doby V LHP. He's not better than the 7 spot, and your team will be better if you have 7 guys better than him V LHP.

I've used Doby a lot at Baker, and his OBP V LHP hasn't been leadoff material. He can hit 4th V RHP in a homer park, but your lineup is pretty stacked with power.

I'd find a place for Robinson so you have a good speed/hi OBP guy at the top of the lineup, Griffey probably isn't it.

I like your 2-8 slots V RHP :D But I'd go Doby/Cash/Oglivie.

Good luck!

Cash will outperform Doby V LHP by a good margin.

The site is giving me problems trying to post a few Doby/Cash teams, or I'd show you.

Good luck.

Get Burns...

Postby Play By The Rules » Thu Dec 01, 2005 12:21 pm

...and you'll have a great platoon at first. Cash isn't that good vs. LHP, sure he has some HRs but I'd platoon him with Burns.
