3B defense

When choosing between two players for 3B, looking at their defense, would you rather have a 2e28 or a 3e10 rating?

I believe you would want the 3e10 due to the fact that the error rating comes in to play at 3B more than any other position(I think). There was some sort of equivilancy chart posted somewhere at some time comparing different ranges and e ratings.

Most fielding chances go up the middle, so the range differential means less at 3B than at 2B or SS. However, when the third baseman does field a ball and needs to make a play with it, your error rating will come into play. The difference between 10 and 28 is very significant. I'd go with the 3 range guy. Also, player salary goes up with the increase in range. I'd rather spend the same $$ for the lesser-ranged guy, as generallly you'll find (upon reviewing the cards) that the latter guy hits better. Your corner infielders should be producers for you if possible, so go for the pop...

DJ is right 3e8 over 2e28.

In those charts DJ mentioned, a 3e8 the TB p/G is listed as 8.5 whereas the 2e28 is 13.7

I remember them in the old boards...should look 'em up and revive them.

OK, it took me a while to track down in the old forums but here's the link to the charts that we alluded to before.

BTW, those old forums are a blast to read :D

BTW if memory serves me well, luckyman expalined these charts in some thread and also explained an error in the OF data and how to fix it...too much to remember right now.

Huff or Polanco

Postby bravefalcon7 » Tue Dec 27, 2005 1:00 pm

OK, given the above advice, I picked up Chipper (4e11) to play 3B. He has only committed 2 errors after over 200 ABs. He has only hit .196, but does have 13 HRs & 30 RBI. He just got injured for 6 games and we are at the 130 game mark. Huff (4e24) and Polanco (3e10) are available. My team plays at Turner and my next 6 games are in Shea & Petco. Counsell is my back-up 3B. Would you drop Chipper for either Huff or Polanco?

Here is my team:

I would be hard pressed to drop Chipper, but depending on your league, I have always had great luck with Huff and terrrible luck with Chipper. But, I try not to play Huff at 3b. You need to look at risk versus reward.

Polanco has some pop, but I have always used him at 2b, not at the power position.

Good luck.

Drop Chipper for Huff now. Huff will do fine as your 3B. I can't believe he is a free agent.
