Why Rick Manning?

Postby Jablowmi » Fri Dec 02, 2005 8:35 am

Confusing autodraft result last night. Listed are the order of my offensive picks and, where applicable, the players I got instead.

1. Brett (got Schmidt!!!!!!!!!!)
2. Trammell
3. Strawberry
4. Doran
5. Rice (got Mitchell)
6. McGwire (got Salad Driessen)
7. Gorman
8. Kal
9. Fisk
10. Yount (just for fun - got Lemon)
11. Polonia (got Brouhard)
12. Young
13. Scott (got Rick Manning????)
14. Melvin
15. Law

Again, how did I get Rick Manning ($2.16) for Tony Scott ($0.75)? First, I'm surprised that HAL stuck with the position (CF) rather than going to another $0.75er. Second, HAL could've gone with another, cheaper, CF, Herm Winningham ($0.85).

Not a big deal at all. Just curious. Maybe it's an omen - Rick Manning BELONGS on this Riverfront team.........

You did not get Manning for Scott.

Did you list Shelby on your card? My guess is that you did.

The players on my list (I printed it out before I plugged it in) are listed above in order. The players I got are - if different - are listed in parentheses.

I listed the 15 offensive players only b/c Manning couldn't have been picked up for a pitcher. However, to complete the picture, here are my (bad) pitchers:

Swan
Farr (Terry Leach)
Worrell (J Rob)
Howell
Garber (Allen)
Oil Can
Andersen (F Williams)
Schmidt
Caldwell (Ballard)
Kison (Sorenson)

Ok. Here is my guess.

Tony Scott is the last CF alphabetically. Rather than cycling back to the top of the .75 guys, the draft system went with the best player at that position with your remaining cash at that point during the autodraft.

Example:

HAL is trying to grab Tony Scott with your 13th pick. Due to missed players so far, you had 2.4m left over. The draft logic will gown downwards alphabetically to get you the next available primary CF at that price. (None). As a result, HAL sees 2.4 left and takes the most expensive available CF that fits in your remaining salary.

I know what I am trying to suggest, but I may not have articulated it properly.

That seems to be what was done here. It's just contrary to what I believed could/would happen. No big deal, just interesting. The big deal is the # of RH sluggers I have on my team - need a lefty..............

Manning ain't bad. The D is great, but I'd rather have Petis for the price. You don't need him so don't worry about it. We did a league once where everyone had to draft almost all the same player. In some case HAL gave you more that 80 mills worth.
