In the spirit of all the great managers who have been honored in these and the old message boards, and all the self-congratulatory messages posted, and in the spirit of full disclosure, I want to announce publicly that, as a manager, I suck. I back this up with my record:
Of my 12 completed teams, 4 of the first 5 finished below .500, including 4 3rd place finishes and one 4th place (to be honest, though, in one of those 3rd place finishes, I led the division the entire season until the final week, and finished 2 games out of the WC). Of the next 7 teams, all but one had winning records and finished either 1st or 2nd (making the playoffs 4 times, and the finals twice).
HOWEVER, of my 7 active teams, 5 are either at or below .500, I have 1 1st, 2 2nds, 1 3rd, and 3 4th places. Combined, my 7 active teams are 13 games below .500. After analyzing all this data, I can reach only one conclusion: whereas I may have known something about baseball during my completed teams, I now SUCK as a manager.
