SPAM problems?

Postby F.O.X » Sat Dec 03, 2005 7:08 am

I am in a really fun interactive league in 2005 and early in the season my friend sends out an e-mail that says:

To: All
From: ************

Subject: Stat of the Week
Date: Saturday 11/26/2005 09:47 AM

Brad Wilkerson

Real 2004 season: 160 games, 67 RBIs

Our league: 36 games, 54 RBIs

A few hours later one of the managers replies

To: All
From: ****************

Subject: Re: Stat of the Week
Date: Saturday 11/26/2005 01:17 PM

How about if we restrict league e-mail to really
pertinent issues?

If you want to send to everyone else that's fine
but instead of sending to "all teams in the
league" please send to everyone else except me. I
have a lot of teams and don't have time to look at
extraneous e-mails every day.

Thanks for your understanding.

So we do cut back a little bit but apparently not enough because he is set off by a harmless e-mail from another manager:

To: All
From: *******

Subject: Re: Re: Meet the Mets?
Date: Wednesday 11/30/2005 01:35 PM

My theory--Much easier being a big fish in a small pond, than being a big
fish in a big pond! For every Jeter there are a hundred Beltrans, Bobby B,
Pavano,Johnson, Brown's Etc> Most cannot stand up to the pressure that
the NY/LA media puts on them, Jeter is truly one of a kind!

This produces an extremely nasty and disturbing response from the "anti spam" manager:

To: ************
From: ***********

Subject: Re: Re: Re: Meet the Mets?
Date: Wednesday 11/30/2005 02:08 PM

Apparantly you guys can't read.

NO SPAM

STOP sending me crap, if you have something
important to say TO ME then feel free to send.

STOP.

Otherwise I'll start sending you a bunch of
messages you don't care anything about and see how
you like it.

Seriously.

*******************************************

He then spammed one of the managers with 45 e-mails.

My question is two fold:

Has this every happened to anyone in another league?
What is the definition of pertinent in stratomatic? My assumption was that anything baseball related was fair game?

I have seen a similar scenario in a couple of leagues. Try to ignore the grumpy owner. We are playing a game and having fun. People like Mr. Grump try to quash other's enjoyment of the game. Is it everyone else's problem if Mr. Grump is in so many leagues that he can't stay focued if there are any messages? I think not. Mr. Grump should simply delete any messages that don't have "TRADE OFFER" in the subject line instead of trying to create a selfish rule of "no messages in any league that I am in".

On the other hand I have also seen on occasion someone sending bunches of frivolous and just plain silly emails that don't have anything to do with baseball at all. These can be a little annoying after a while. There is nothing wrong with having fun but don't take it to an extreme.

My advise to you would be to not respond angryly to the 45 messages that Mr. Grump sent. Just ignore him and continue with your normal league message sending. Don't let the Grinch steal your enjoyment of TSN SOM.

...or...enjoy sending emails to individual owners who have just swept Mr. Grump in a series, congratulating them on vanquishing the beast...

If you don't want to read Mr. Grumps mail, do as I do. Check the delete box and click. Presto the non-sensical message is vanished. :D

Dang...I bet I know who the grump is. lol Send him back NINETY messages!

Really...it's rather sad when people join a community to play a game yet want no part of the community. Might as well play in a jail cell.

The e-mails sent around were related to the game. It is O.K. to gripe about a players performance relative to his card. This alerts other managers to the fact that maybe his card is weaker than his real life stats.

I don't think it matters if it's pertinent or not. He can check the delete box--he obviously doesn't have time because he doesn't manage his time well--he reads a lot of spam and responds to it instead of deleting it... :P

I am the "grump." I sent repeated requests to a particular owner in that league NOT to send me extraneous e-mails or I would do the same to him. This was in addition to the league-wide message posted above. He said that "he would enjoy getting whatever I sent him." Thus, the flood.

Funny, the spam has completely stopped.

I'm sorry if I'm not really interested in your daily updates of your teams. I DON'T HAVE TIME to deal with unnecessary e-mails. Start a blog or a thread on the boards, if I want to read it I will. If the other owners like it that's great, it was OK for awhile until it started EVERY DAY from multiple owners.

SIMPLE people, if someone asks you not to include them, instead of clicking "send to all managers" just control-click every other manager in the league but me. Why is this so hard? Was it really worth all the effort you made to complain about my request or wouldn't it have been SOOO much easier for ALL OF US just to respect my wishes and leave me alone unless you have a trade offer?

Oh and tersign, how am I supposed to know if something is spam or not? Occasionally people DO send pertinent messages by league e-mail.

[quote:b8d609b338]My advise to you would be to not respond angryly to the 45 messages that Mr. Grump sent. Just ignore him and continue with your normal league message sending. Don't let the Grinch steal your enjoyment of TSN SOM. [/quote:b8d609b338]

After the first flood of twenty or so messages, he responded with three messages that I deleted and did not read. So in the message line of my next twenty or so messages I expressed that I would no longer be reading his mails, and this is how I would respond in the future if he sent me anything at all.

Voila, presto, peace at last.
