Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

Another Canadian? :)

Welcome crazy. I assume you're from the Great White North? Whereabouts? I'm in Vancouver myself. You'll notice there are several other Canadians here (penngray, Arryl Tremaine, Marcus Wilby). And we tend to make the best SOM players :P

LOL that's cool...glad to see many Canuks on here. I'm from the bottom end, Windsor Ontario. I haven't even started a game yet and I'm liking this whole mystery card thing. :)

Welcome to the 80's!

Tiger Stadium is a great park to play in - It's no secret, but you need to load your pitching staff with lefties (to neutralize the power hitting lefties that come visit your park), and then obviously load your batting order with power hitting lefties. You always need balance to some extent in this game, but when you play half your games at Tiger Stadium, you need to put the ball in the bleachers. Avoid lightweights with good AVG but no power.

Just my two cents.....most important - pick guys YOU like and have fun. There are no certanties when there's dice involved.

Good luck!

Thanks Fletch. I can't wait for the season to start. I am doing my best to find the lefty pitchers and hitters. I thought Pete Rose would be good to have but it looks like he may not be the greatest asset for Tiger stadium eh? Not much power there.

I wouldn't want Charlie Hustle in Tiger Stadium...

best to first check other options

Rose can get on base and he is cheap. He can be a good value if you get a good Rose card. A high OBA for two fifty can mean money somewhere else, but I agree with Fletch it is best to first check other options.

Hey YountFan...that was you I just made a trade with eh? How come you seemed rather annoyed? Forgive me if I'm imagining things.

Thanks, Fletch...this explains a lot to me. For one thing, I now see why YountFan likes to have LHP in his rotation. It works in Tiger, which is one of his favored stadiums.

Maybe I'll give Tiger a try, since I like lefthanded hitters, HRs and have been fooling around with LHP a bit more lately.

The question I've got is about the "low singles" element. Should I look for hitters who draw lots of walks and hit lots of HR? (I tend to like that type anyway.) Should I look for junk ball type pitchers who might have higher WHIPs but don't give up HR? Anyway, it seems like it might be worth a try.

Outta,

Setting a draft card for Tiger Stadium is tricky. On one hand, it would be great to stack your card with the likes of Guidry, Key, Jackson, Leibrandt, Carlton, etc. but on the other hand, you gotta have Reggie, Daniels, Murray, Cooper, Strawberry, etc. It's tough to walk away from an autodraft with good representation on both fronts. If you want the power bats, think second tier pitchers who have a chance of performing well at Tiger Stadium, like Whitson, Swift, and believe it or not, Matt Young was the ace of my Championship Tiger Stadium squad

If you load yourself with LH power hitters, you still need to hope for big cards. With low singles at the park, you'll die without good cards being played. Like YF said earlier, you DO need some OBP to score runs, so cheaper guys with good OBP are nice - such as Lonnie Smith, Alvin Davis, Bochte, and Rose.

If you haven't tried Tiger Stadium, I'd definitely try it for the challenge. I won one title out of 5 or so teams. Just when I thought I had it mastered (winning the championship with my first Tiger Stadium team), I fell on my face four times straight. But that's the beauty of the Mystery Card and BTT80's :D

I'd be up for a simple theme league where everyone used Tiger Stadium - the results would be interesting.....

Yes, I think we traded and I am not annoyed at all (I am the Hamiltons III). Good luck in the waivers today. I need to get few guys and being #12 I probally will not get them....then it will be on to plan B
