I'm glad to see such a lively response! I'll do a running total sometime today but I'll leave the ballot open till next Sunday. :D

[quote:1a0d992c04]Just out of curiosity, to make the real list of eligible HOF canditates, do you kust have to have played enough years and then been retired for enough years...otherwise, how the hell does Gary DiSarcina make a list even remotely linked to the HOF?[/quote:1a0d992c04]

To make the initial cut that allows somebody to be considered by the BBWAA for inclusion in the Hall, the only requirement is that you have to play in the majors for ten years. That means guys like DiScarcina show up on the ballot--for one year. But you need something like 10% of the vote to STAY on the ballot, so guys like that disappear just as fast as they appear. I think it's a pretty good, simple system. You need to play at least 10 years to have any chance for the Hall, but you don't stay on the ballot long if you have no chance. The only problem is that guys like Dwight Evans can be gone before people have time to pause, reconsider his career, and decide, "Hey, he was really a great player!"

Anyway, here's my list:
Blyleven
Dawson
Gossage
John
Mattingly
Murphy
Parker
Rice
Sutter
Trammell

Dale Murphy
Dave Parker
Jim Rice
Rick Gossage
Bert Blyleven
Don Mattingly (for sheer dominance of the game in the mid-80s, apart from stats)

Can't fathom why Belle is so unpopular in this group of hitters; not the most charming of guys but his stats far outshine Clark's, IMHO. 10 consecutive seasons of 20+ HRs, 100 RBIs (ok, 9 consec. seasons of 100 RBIs, but he had 95 in '91); .295 career BA, .369 OBP, .564 slugging... rivals Clark's numbers. Dawson has always been borderline for me.

Minoso -

I agree Belle deserves to be in tha Hall - just not first ballot. He was a much much better hitter than Dawson. The only guys on this list who were nearly as good as him as a pure hitter are Mattingly and Rice. To me the MOST deserving player on this list is Blyleven who is often overlooked because he played most of his career for lousy teams.
