Has anybody ever tried this strategy in Candlestick?

Has anybody ever tried this strategy in Candlestick?

I spent under $12 mil on pitching and grabbed as much OBP as I could get my hands on:

Offense leans heavily to the left, but I have Bennett and there's only 1 hard lefty in the division (and my hitters are all balanced anyway). I don't have a ton of speed on the basepaths but I do have 3 boppers (Foxx/Williams/Ott) in the middle of the lineup.

Defense isn't half bad.

The pitching staff is the big x-factor, trying to take max advantage of the 'Stick with guys like Catfish and Preacher.

Thoughts?

My at a glance opinion is the team is too slow. A good idea though. :)

Yes, speed is the #1 concern.

Actually Nev, I expect your Devious B*stards to win this league. Man, what a lineup you have...

I think you will be disappointed with the performance of Ott, Williams, and Foxx in Candlestick. From my perspective, I'd trade them in for cheaper, faster, high OBP guys and get better pitching.

You don't need expensive pitching at the stick, there are a lot of guys in the $4 million range who will perform very well there, but I'd be scared to go into a season with that staff myself.

You do have to win some games on the road too...

Tried this four 4 times, but not in the Stick, Forbes. 1st time lost in the semis, 2nd time won a ring, 3rd time no joy, last time in progress.

That said, you are entirely too slow so you may not score as expected. I would go with at most 11 pitchers, your pen is deep, but average. Keep Richert and Worrell, combine the rest into a Fosnow, Hall or Miller. Your SPs are fine, but I've always used cheaper ones than Catfish and Bennett.

Make sure you have SPs good for the road too.

Best of luck, sschu

WOW... I just hopped on the Boards to ask the exact same question!!! Happy to see responses, this is my effort so far, pre-waivers:

My variation is to try to get a few more natural homers in the lineup from each side and to have a stacked bullpen.

My comments on your team: I REALLY like your OPB, but I would throw a top righty closer in there, esp. with that starting staff. I toyed around with the idea of getting a Brown/Camnitz type #1 to really cement this team if it gets into the playoffs (yeah, [i:97d2a78971]right...[/i:97d2a78971]) but decided to go all the way with nickel starters, and I got the ones I wanted - I may still change my mind on this, but it's something to ponder for your team as well. Good luck!

Not sure if I actually did, but I'd like to take credit for "pioneering" this type of team ......

I did it a while back and had a season long dogfight with one of Munich Man's Germaniacs pitching teams. I ended up losing to him in the finals with this team:

I have a similar team starting up tonight:

A little more spent on pitching because I could not get the offensive players I was looking for ........

CR was the first to do this as far as I know, I plagerized his idea. The key sucess factors IMHO are:

1. Team speed, when you get hits, you have to score

2. Combo of OBP and SLG. You need some boppers to go with the OBP, Hornsby, Gehrig, Musial, Snider types. Cobb is a key get, he really excels on this type of team. The sluggers should get lots of xtra-base hits, not necessarily HRs, Gehrig is a good if you can afford him.

3. Cheap, but good pen, guys like Hall, Miller, Taylor, Fosnow, Worrell

4. These teams can get hurt on the road at slugger parks, so if your division has 2 or 3 HR parks, you'll have to go with Faber/Vance type guys and the overall team will suffer. If you draft a team and this turns out to be the division foes, I would consider changing direction and get some $5-7M SPs.

Best of luck, sschu

Seeing this post reminded me of one of my favorite teams. Early on in ATG I this team won it all for me...

This team went 7-1 in the playoffs and it was Munich Man whom I beat in the Finals before he went on that long streak of Finals wins. Sorry Rick :P :D

In general I have had very good success with this type of team. :D

Good Luck!!!
