Are you talking About Sidd Finch as in "The Sidd Finch"
I remember reading an article in '84 or '85 in Sports Illustrated about this unbelievable pitcher that pitched barefoot and a bunch of other things.
It was a great story and if you had read it at the time, you would have been completely drawn in as well. It was around the time of the Mets and Cardinals rivalry (me being a Cards fan) and I think the Story was that Finch was going to the Mets to pitch along side of Gooden in the Met's rotation.....what a great story....what a great April Fools day joke.
If you get the chance and you can find it, the Story was in S.I. in either April of '84 or '85 and I think the author was the same guy who wrote "The Paper Lion" Plimpton
It was quite the rage back in the day. It had people talking for months about it....it was awesome.
