Boston better keep Manny & Damon. Nixon, V-Tek are getting old and Ortiz will be pitched around to. Their pitching is weak & inexperienced.[/quote:a659e01e00]

Schilling, David Wells, Wakefield, Arroyo, Clement, Beckett, Clement, Foulke, Timlin & Mota are inexperienced? I can understand weak for most of those guys but inexperienced?

Hopefully they get rid of Wells if he really wants out. I wonder who will catch Wakefield with Mirabelli now gone. Varitek has struggled with the knuckleball in the past.

Not only did the Mets land top free agents Wagner, Delgado and Lo Duca, but they got 'em from division rivals! So even if their production may be less than if they'd stayed with their previous teams, those rivals will not be seeing that production on their teams anymore. Seems like a good deal all around for New York. I agree that until the Mets can somehow vanquish the Braves, Atlanta will be the team to beat. No matter how challenged Atlanta looks "on paper" in spring training, they always pull it out. VERY FRUSTRATING! But I'm still optimistic...imagine if Omar somehow manages to land Barry Zito...

Biggest news from San Diego is just keeping Giles and Hoffman. Getting rid of Loretta really hurts, but they had to pay those bills somehow.

I'm waiting for Steinbrenner to purchase my Royals and use it as a farm team. We'd probably win 20 more games. Maybe Brett and Wilson will come out of retirement.

To clarify, I was assuming Schilling & Foulke aren't healthy and Boomer goes to the Padres. Clement is a .500 pitcher, no matter how dominant he can be at times, other times he gets raked. w/o a Healthy Schilling they don't have that dominant starter. Beckett could be that but 'Mr. Blister" needs to stay on the field. Bosox have big question marks in the staff (just like all the other teams) The only constant is that offense and taking away Damon & Ramirez weakens them big time. Lowell & Loretta are not the answers.

O.K who is left?

Postby the splinter » Fri Dec 09, 2005 1:00 pm

and where are they going?

I like Nomar in either L.A or Washington and playing 3b although he may want to be in the A.L

The Big Hurt or Piazza to the Angels as a DH

The Cubbies need a RF...how about Encarnacion?

I have actually really enjoyed all of the trade activity going on this winter. I remember being in my early teens (early 90's) and waking up every morning to grab the sports section out of the paper and see what happened the day before - you know, before everyone had the internet installed in every electrical appliance in their homes.

I think that Soriano to the Nationals makes a lot of sense, especially if someone can convince him that it's okay to take a couple of pitches. Walk a little, Fonsie. The rest of his game will really give their mostly stagnant offense a boost.

The Mets are looking really good right now, but then again, I thought they would take it last season when they snatched up Pedro and Beltran. Hard to call a New York team an underdog, but I have to admit that knocking the Braves off the top of the mountain is going to be pretty tough.

The Orioles bringing in Leo Mazzone as pitching coach could pay huge dividends - someone needs to teach the O's arms how to get it done, because that powerful offense they used to have just isn't going to get it done forever. Not that 4th place every year is "getting it done." I think it will be interesting to see how much their pitching improves.

I am, however, frustrated with my Giants. They've got a quarter of their payroll still sunk into Y A, and there is no guarantee that he'll be the same hitter as before. "We're hoping to have him on the field for 120 games." I'm hoping for a dynamic younger player in left field for a quarter of the price, with a glove and an arm, who could chip in 25-30 homers and a .300 average. Yeah, I know, sounds like a young... um... Barry Bonds. I can dream, can't I?
- Moises Alou is also going to be sitting about 1/4 of the season, which will make the offense pretty flimsy.
-Mark Sweeney at first base, after letting J.T. Snow walk? Come on! Sweeney is no slouch, I will admit that - but if your team is going to be as bad as the Giants look to be, why not get one more year out of a fan favorite like Snow (another 120 game player, if that) and hit the free agent market in a Met-like way next year when Barry, Durham, Alfonzo and a few others come off the books? Letting J.T. walk was a bad move, even with his productive days behind him.
-I keep reading that Matt Morris is "on the Giants radar." Why? He's Brett Tomko with a bigger paycheck, and that's not what the Giants need to compete. Spending more money for basically the same player doesn't give the illusion of "trying," no matter how you swing it.
-I am, however, interested in seeing how the Hawkins/Benitez tandem fairs at the end of games next season. If Benitez is healthy and Hawkins isn't allowing three run bombs in a pitchers park, the 8th and 9th innings could look pretty good.

All in all, the Giants only hope is that the rest of the division sticks around at the mediocre level of this past season, and maybe they can back into the playoffs the way the Padres did. Not likely, but I can dream.

Actually JD, the G's traded Hawkins for Steve Kline this week, so the pen will be Worrell & Kline as R/L setup team, with Walker in there as well...

I like the Sweeney call (good interview on KNBR the other day), and will miss JT but I am not that broken up abt it. I want the G's to either devleop or trade for corner IF/OF so JT's leaving now should accelerate that process....

Is there a website that I can utilize to see [i:b4b34d1faf]all[/i:b4b34d1faf] of the transactions as they happen? I've just been checking MSN Sports when I get home from work, and that's about it - had no idea that the Giants had traded Hawkins, and it actually kind of bothers me because they gave up Jerome Williams and David Aardsma to get him in the first place. Blah.

I'd like them to develop a couple of good corner infielders as well, but something seems to be missing in their scouting department. It seems that almost every other team can come up with a couple of young studs every year or two, while the Giants counter with Jason Ellison and Yorvit Torrealba (since traded to Seattle). Maybe I need to look at the Giants from the perspective of another team's fan and see if maybe our prospects are viewed the same way I see Andy Marte or Chase Utley or Rocco Baldelli. I doubt it, but maybe that would help.

Can we just dust off Will Clark and trot him out to first base?
