SOM Through the Years League - Chat Thread - 2008 draft time

Postby FoggyOne » Sun Jul 22, 2007 9:39 pm

Also, I believe this was answered in the example in the beginning......BONDS.

BONDS has no card in one of the years.

I will happily go backwards and unwind draft if that is the consensus. BUT those who picked players with no 02 crads (or no cards in one of the subject years) should have to fill in. The draft should be restarted from that point. T o make them fill in for an "illegal pick" doesn't seem fair to them.

At this point it's more a matter of what everyone's assumptions were going into the draft.

I thought the idea was to pick carefully, because you get 10 players you keep every year unless they retired during the stretch, or SOM didn't have a card for them.

The reason I thought this was because I also thought it was supposed to be in the spirit of us all "going back" to 02, drafting 10 guys we knew we'd have to keep, and riding out the next 5 years of their careers...sort of like a real franchise.

Right or apparently wrong, that was my thinking. I don't have a problem one way or the other, but not having to draft from the 02 set would make a big difference in strategy. So just realizing that now kinda sucks.

My bad for not realizing that, but there's obviously several of us who were thinking the same way. [b:b6cca25e8a]Since we're already into the draft, maybe a slight modification to the drafting rules then?? How about at least 7 of your 10 have to be from 02? [/b:b6cca25e8a]

Any thoughts on that?

Bonds has an '02 card. Using him as an example of this strategy leads the average mind (mine and the rest of us who don't prey on loopholes for fun) to think we were drafting 10 out of the '02 deck.

My last word on the subject.

Here's round 4:

Round 4

1. Frank M - G. Anderson
2. Woods007 - Jason Giambi
3. Alas, Poor Visick - Larry Walker
4. Doc Tax - Michael Young
5. Keyzick - Furcal (PROXY)
6. uncle ny - Billy Wagner
7. fowldawg - Orlando Hudson
8. BED - Konerko
9. Runnin' Rebel - Shawn Green (proxy)
10. geekor - Miguel Cabrera
11. toshiro - Jason Schmidt
12. FoggyOne -

There are several pick in there before Cabrerra that I suspect would have been Cabrerra, Liriano, etc. had the person drafting thought they were available. Likely in round 3 as well, but I didn't go back that far.

Cut it out guys...this is just a game.

I don't mind having the draft open to players who did not play in 2002.

It is a big disadvantage to not have these set picks.

The manager with a player with no card gets one less set pick and one more auto-draft player. So they have 16 autodraft picks and we have 15 Their marginal pick is after we have drafted 15 players...not a relevant negative to the other managers with full complements of reserved players.

Just step up to the plate, draft whom you want and let the dice roll!

Seems like a key challenge, when assuming that the player has to have a 2002 card (which I assumed we did) is to mitigate the 'bust' card. Almost all players who have a 2002 card 'bust' at some point. The draft seems to have rewarded players who are the most consistent with the highest picks. Many of us are going to be stuck with a 2 million dollar 'bust' card in some years that isn't really worthy of full time play, but you can't really let sit on the bench. That seems to be one of the nice aspects to this format.

Drafting purely in the future may open a pandora's box. If you wanted to "game the game", you could try to target guys who didn't have a bust year. Yea, you don't get a 2002 pick, but the player pool is deep enough that you should be able to find a replacement. Best of all, you're not throwing away $2 or 3 million dollars. Why go for Mora, Clemens or Reyes and have to suck up all those bust years, when you could go for Mauer, Howard, Luke Scott, Carpenter, Wright, Wang, Liriano. RPs could become choice in this strategy. Saito, Zumaya,RSoriano. I can't think of many but you get the idea. Best of all--the 2002 player pool is very deep, esp for pitching, so you aren't going to lose out on the first season so much by solely staking out the future.

Something to think about.

Just draft whomever you want! This is silly!

I wish we still had the old boards wher eyou could post pictures, as I would have posted this one for this silly debate:

My $.02 is that taking a player without a 2002 card is no different than taking a guy without a 2007 card. My recommendation would be that only players who have a card 4 of the 5 years are eligible to be drafted.

So why should I even draft anymore 2002 players?

Why should I even draft anymore 2003 players for that matter?

Sorry woods, I just don't think this is silly.

So if my next few picks are Felix Hernandez (2006), Liriano (2007),
Luke Scott (2007) nobody would mind? Granted the "cream of the crop" would be skimmed off but then what keepers do I have to carry over into 2003 or 2005 or etc...?
