pitcher error ratings

pitcher error ratings

Does the error rating for pitchers represent the number of errors they would make in a season if they pitched every inning of every game? I am trying to ascertain how much of a liability Joe Nathan's e42 rating is. Would I be better off with Jonathan Papelbon's e21 or go with a closer like Mariano Rivera who gives up more on his card, but has an e0 rating.

I wouldn't base my pitcher selection on their e rating or what hitter's card they would use in a non-DH league. Just take the best pitcher's card for the money.

Nathan only made two errors in real life. If you do the math (2 errors, divided by 68.3 IP, times 162 games, times 9 innings), that would be 42 errors if he pitched every inning of every game. But if you only use him for the 68.3 IP he pitched in real life, then he'll only make about two errors for you. And needless to say, you'll never use him anything like 1,458 innings. (Although if you figure out a way to, let us know ;)

Relievers used as emergency starters when a SP goes down have been known to shine (and fail, but never mind). So here's an idea for someone who wants to experiment with a credit. Buy 5 Sx/Rx and use them in relief. Use the bulk of your pitching $ for RP and use them as starters. It may sound far-fetched now but come January, February.........
