PJs Fenway Odyssey

PJs Fenway Odyssey

Postby PJ Axelsson » Mon Oct 31, 2005 10:17 pm

Ok, I've spent enough time in Fenway Park (reality) to feel quite ashamed that I cannot win in Fenway '67 (SOM). I'm now determined to produce a winner at the Fens. This quest begins tonight, the search to unlock the secrets to Fenway '67. Like Cousteau, Amudsen, Magellan, Chris Stevens, and all those pioneers who pursued an elusive path, I will attempt to unlock the secrets of the beast, [b:5ad144e1ff][i:5ad144e1ff]FENWAY '67[/size:5ad144e1ff][/i:5ad144e1ff][/b:5ad144e1ff]!

I have already received lots of help on this quest. I figure it's worth doing because it is my hypothesis that there is more than one way to win at Fenway '67. The true deadball parks are well documented, but the hitters parks remain sort of a mystery...at least to me.

And so, I started a blog, just to say I started a blog, but I don't like the blogs. I do like it here, and so here are my teams:

Here's an idea for you, PJ. Instead of spending all that money and/or credits on finding a winning Fenway team, let others do the work for you by creating an all-Fenway league. All teams must play in Fenway '67 and see who can develop the best team ... then use that info on future Fenway teams.

Of course, it would help if the Strat stats for "Your Team" broke them down home and away instead of just L/R. :x

On team 5, PJ, I'd downgrade Jones or Doerr for a cheap platoon or single player (F White, Nettles/Wera) and upgrade Heathcote to a better OBP guy for the top.

Interesting mix of options, without evaluating each, here are players I've had good experience and not so good experience with at Fenway. I'm sure every has an opinion!

Good:
Reggie Jackson - consistently outperforms his card
Campy - can rack MONSTER number, 60+ HRs are possible
Brett - .380 BA and 90+ xtrabase hits
DiMagg - the best slugger in the game for the $$$
Cleon - high OBP, runs, fields, great leadoff and complement to Brett/Mantle/McCovey
McCovey - 50+ HRs
Gordon - some do not like Gordon, at Fenway he will hit 45+ HRs, .270 BA and provide great D

I do not mind the injury risk DiMagg or Brett give, it gets you once in a while, but tolerable.

Not so good (for me):
Eddie Mathews - too expensive
Parrish - cheap, but you get what you pay for
Crosetti - an absolute waste of money
Morgan - $10M for .420 OBP seems VERY expensive
Rickey - too fragile, moody
Clark - cannot hit LHs
Boggs - never seems to live up to expectations, too slow

Then there are the obvious great gets, Yount, Snider, Simmons, Mays, Hornsby, etc.

FWIIW, best of luck, sschu

Treyomo, I've been exploring that very move. I've got till Monday to find the answer there.

MoCrash, I'm using all these credits up because I don't believe you can get a fair assessment if everyone is in Fenway '67. I felt that individual leagues were the best way to go, and I've had a nice run of good luck lately.

Sschu, I agree with most of that, but Eddie Mathews is my absolute favorite 3b next to Buck Weaver. For the money he hits as well as anyone at a position with few consistent performers. I also agree that Joe D has put up some of the best seasons I've ever had.

I think that the best team will be either team 4 or 5. I wanted to try the all hitter-no pitcher teams with 1 and 2 and a bullpen experiment for kicks with 3, but don't have much faith in those anymore.

Last night launched teams 1-4 on their way, more to report later...

Mid-Season report

Postby PJ Axelsson » Tue Dec 13, 2005 10:34 am

Update:

Surprise surprise, they are winning! Right now, two would make the playoffs as wildcards, and all but one (Fenway or Bust! #1) appears to be in the legitimate running for the playoffs, and they are at .500.

For the most part. Feel free to check them out. I haven't really done anything to change them, just a few minor tweaks to the settings and lineups. No personnel changes.

If only our boards were as clear and easy to read. Nicely done. :)

Good luck the rest of the way.

The Odyssey is coming to a close, with only Fenway or Bust! 5 remaining, currently in the semi finals with a split of games 1-2.

However, the sequels are bustling with activity:

This one has to wait a week:

Coveleski/BagbySr/BagbyJr/Speer/Rommel
Tincup/Fosnow/Garman/Riddle/Vance

1. Morgan, Joe (L) 2B
2. Jones, Cleon (R) LF
3. Yount, Robin (R) SS
4. Mays, Willie (R) CF
5. Mathews, Eddie (L) 3B
6. Murray, Eddie (S) 1B
7. May, Milt (L) C
8. Rice, Sam (L) RF
9. Pitcher

and this one is rolling along with a nice start:

Ford/Coveleski/BagbySr/BagbyJr/Speer/Rommel
Staley/Fosnow/Pina/Garman

1. Rice, Sam (L) RF
2. Selkirk, George (L) LF
3. Hornsby, Rogers (R) 2B
4. Cepeda, Orlando (R) 1B
5. Yount, Robin (R) SS
6. Bailey, Ed (L) C
7. Agee, Tommie (R) CF
8. Cey, Ron (R) 3B
9. Pitcher P

My other two playoff teams fizzled, further fueling my frenetic fascination with finalizing this foolish Fenway folly!
