How do I prevent this?

Near the end of a tight season. 1st and 2nd place teams facing each other. I have Kazmir specifically set for "slow hook" since my rivals are much worse against leftys. HAL yanks him in the first inning after giving up a grand slam. Then my "mop up/slow hook" guy, Russ Springer, comes in and goes a full 1/3 of an inning before being replaced. The game, of course, goes extra innings which eventually means 2 RH starters get put in and they are tired and lose. Now, I think, those guys are screwed for their next start.

How do 2 "slow hook" guys get yanked in 1 inning??? It's specifically what I didn't want to have happen! Is there any way to prevent this?

Bernie posted this in the Questions, Suggestions forum yesterday:

For what it's worth, "slow hook" does NOT mean "always leave the guy in for longer than normal" - it means "for each time we're deciding whether to take him out or not, decrease the chance by a certain percentage". Over the course of the season Halladay will definitely pitch more innings. But it is not meant to guarantee that he will go longer in any particular game.

I think the relevant settings are:

Closer usage: Regular
Relief usage: Normal
Intentional Walk: Conservative

Bernie also posted that is trying to TOTALLY REWRITE the bullpen logic. I hope he gets it done soon as I am fed up with Hal's use of the bullpen. I am pretty much just doing long term commitments now.

FWIW, Kazmir would have been tired after giving up five runs in one inning. You probably wouldn't have wanted him to stay in there. Springer could have been removed quickly because he had pitched a lot in recent games. If that's not the case, then I can't explain that one.

Springer had not pitched in the 4 games previous to this one. I guess it's just one of those things. I would have wanted someone to really mop up and take the abuse, rather than put 2 starters in later in the game and put my team in real jeopardy the next few games. But, that's kind of a hard thing to do given the fairly simple manager directives we have. It's a tough balancing for Bernie I'm sure.

I just reread Bernies quote and noticed the use of "we're". He has worked with HAL very closely for many years. To closely? The changes in RP settings are not as important as your individuality, Bernie. Maybe some UFF.
