Injury lengths?

Postby dkoulomzin » Wed Dec 14, 2005 11:08 am

Hey all,

I need some info and advice. I have Dale Murphy on my new team, and in game 5, he lines out and gets injured vs. a Lefty. That indicates either his first or last card (his last card being his awful year). However, his injury is for 2 games. Looking at his 1983 season (his first card), he played in all 162 games. Can the length of the injury tell me anything about what year he is in? Certainly if it indictates he is in 1989 (he played something like 154 games that season), I'll drop him.

I'm typically a patient player, so I'm willing to stick with him until I gather more evidence if the duration of the injury says nothing about the year.

FWIW (not much), his line:

16ABs, 4 Hs, 1 HR

This may have been addressed elsewhere in the forums, but the great Google didn't turn up any info...

Dan, The length of an injury can reveal more about what year card you have. If the injury is 4 games or longer then that means that the card year is one in which the batter had less than 600 PA (hits + walks). All hitters that had 600 PA have a 3 game max injury. All hitters with less than 600 PA have a 15 game max injury.

Unfortunately for you a 3 game or less injury does not help reveal the card year more than what the play was. Plus both of the possible Dale Murphy years he had over 600 PA anyway.

Thanks, this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

Back of the envelope calculations put the probably of his bad season at just over 50%, so I guess I'll stick with Dale for a while... that seems like the right thing to do, right?

Dan,

B'cuz Murph also provides great D and a decent gun you'll want to stick with him a little longer than others. You should be able to tell his year well before the cut deadline (42 games) and get at least 95% of his salary back should you end up with his bad year. It's early and you already have three years eliminated.

Good luck!

Correct me if I'm wrong but...

...my understand is that there's a second cut off (I believe its above 675 PAs) when a player can only be injured for the duration of the game. Since Murphy's 83 season (good, top of card) has 679 PA's, even a two game injury might indicate that it's the bad season at the bottom of the card, when he had 639 PA. Can anyone confirm this?

I don't know why, but in my experience Murphy seems to be in his bad year more often than not. It shouldn't happen that way, but I've had to drop him twice (both of the times I had him--once after 100 and once after 200 AB) and he seems to show up on the FA pile surprisingly often. I clicked on his card in one of my leagues to get the PA info and found he'd played for four different teams--hitting .233 over 48 games. Oddly enough, the league itself has played only 48 games, suggesting he's been dropped and then instantly added three different times. It's hard to tell if when he struggles it's always his bad year, but he seems to struggle suprisingly often since all four of his good years are so good.

I'm pretty sure the second cutoff is 680 PA's. Will have to look at the injury chart later.

Wow! That one PA would make a real difference in Murphy's case, since the top card is 679.
