Question for Outta Leftfield
In my Identifying RPs thread, you mention picking up Stieb after someone else dropped him where you checked his platoon data after he was cut by another team.
How do you do that?

Sorry to jump in here when you were looking for Outta but I believe he is referring to looking at his L/R splits to try to determine the card year.

I'm trying to understand what he meant when he said:

Was he just looking at the 'Balance' number on the player card? Is so, how he able to see the platoon data.
Is there a way to look at the left/right splits of a released player, or does he just monitor players on other teams to see what their splits are?
I'd love to have an easy way to be able to check the splits on released players so I can determine is they are a good player released prematurely or a bum.

I believe that he mentioned that he went through his boxscores to see how he did vs. righties/lefties. There is no way to see L/R splits once a player hits the waiver wire so checking the boxscores is really the only way. Good managers like OL will do this, lazy ones (like myself) probably wouldn't bother.

That's what I thought, but I as hoping.
I suppose we lazy managers could find a happy medium and from time to time just save the left/right split rosters of our opponents and then when someone is released, we have something to work from.

I did indeed go through the boxscores, counting at bats and hits for both righties and lefties. It was quite laborious but paid off in terms of the results. In fact, it really made my season. My other three starters were solid, and with the addition of Stieb, my four-man rotation was able to carry a team with lackluster offense to a Series crown. Stieb was 2-0 in the playoffs, with an ERA of 2.25.

It's probably only really worth while to comb through boxscores like that in a case like Stieb's, where the one bad year has a significantly different platoon differential from the other years. My theory was that a 6R vs (on average) 2L+ platoon was going to show up even in a six game sample--the number of games he'd pitched for the other team. :wink:
